Another tip for those without a lathe, I used a electric drill and a 'hole saw' I had lying around (without the drill bit attached obviously), it fitted inside the legs, but needed a plastic ty-wrap wrapping around and jamming down between the legs and saw to make a good tight fit. Made the final sanding and adding the circular 'swirls' a doddle once I figured out the right washing-up pad to use!

I should have taken some photos - but it was all fairly straight forward.
