Default Shifting Issues

So, I've been experiencing constant issues with my shifter. Shifting into gears while driving has been difficult and notchy, especially second and fourth gear. Occasionally I would get locked out of said gears while driving and be forced to skip shift. I've also noticed a lot play in my shifter. When it's sitting in neutral and in gear, there's a good 4" diameter of play.

I've brought my car to a honda specialist technician in my area and they've taken it on multiple test drives, each time reporting back that they can't replicate the problems I've been experiencing. I've insisted that there's a problem with my transmission, so they had a look inside the shifter housing and at the shifter assembly. I've attached a photo that they sent to me of the shifter.

The technicians told me that they can't track down any parts for replacement (they only deal with OEM). Frustrated, I've since taken my car back and I'm looking for other options. Is this type of corrosion normal? What should I do now?

Thanks guys.

No, clean that up and if it is in good shape regrease it and repack the enclosure with grease as well. The shifter is available for purchase from honda.

You'll also want to check of the rubber gasket between the transmission case and tunnel is torn. It is what keeps water out of the shifter.

You are also missing the nylon cup. Here is a diy you'll want to follow.

I'd also recommend gravity bleeding the clutch fluid and adjusting your clutch pedal to take out the first of the two free plays out.

I was gonna say the same thing. I had the same issues a while back except my cup thing was there but cracked. Buy a new plastic cup and after you get everything all greased up the ball is hard to get into the cup. I had the most success by putting the ball just on the outside of the cup and then slamming them straight down onto a towel lol. It may be crude but it's the only way I could get them together.

That missing cup is the source of your excessive play in shifter. Its inexcusable that a so called dealer tech couldnt figure that out from simply sitting in your car and wiggling the shift lever back and forth.

All that corrosion is probably due to a faulty rubber bellows that sits between trans and tunnel under the car. Inspect that, replace whatever let all that moisture in or you will have same issue later.

I wanted to add that I just cracked a new cap this way. Also that may have been how my previous cap cracked. Next one I plan to heat up prior to install in an attempt to prevent the cracking.

I've repeated this a few times as I did the same -- I believe someone mentioned putting the cap in a sandwich bag and into boiling water. I partially-cracked mine but went ahead with the install. Bah, $20 down the drain.
