To add more to this Honda have developed the optimum size for oil flow and pressure, its little none fact in the very early days they changed the oil filter design/size on this engine.

On Euros part catalog they have both listed. You can also get the fatter one part no is 501630019 for the Mann filter. I guess the one they sold you is this part no 501680049 which is obviously wrong.

Thanks for the replys . I went to Honda today to get the new filter and spoke the master tech . All though he said the filter is unique to the s2000 is there is not a lot difference between the the smaller or larger filters and if you cut them in half apart from size they are identical . I change it anyway just to be one the safe side . I don't do "that will do" jobs .

The tech is bending the truth, the difference is in the area of the filter media, as Tom and AJ touched on Honda redesigned the filter for the S2000 early in it's life as part of an upgrade to the lubrication system, the lager area allows more filtered oil to pass through the media rather than unfiltered oil through the by-pass valve when the engine is cold or under hard acceleration, there is a thread somewhere in the USA side from a guy who cut a fair few filters open and the difference on some was huge,

When you change the filter, make sure you torque it correctly. Its not just hand tight on the F20.

Found these on the international bit of the forum, interesting reads - learn something new, should get rid of my HAMP filters I had for my Civic as they'll be no good.
