04 model on 03 plate

The DVLA tend to make lots of mistakes but never apologise or accept that they have made an error. They changed the registration on one of my cars which meant that it was not insured, had no MOT or Road Tax if I had been caught in a ANPR check the car would have been impounded. Phoned then up and they couldn't care less. Eventually got it changed back to the correct number but had to cancel a holiday as the car had to stay in the garage. It took them a month to sort it, no letter of apology, complete TOSSERS.

I am in the process of buying a used car.
Previous owner had changed number plate, changed address and sold the car to a Porsche Centre..
DVLA TOTALLY SCREWED IT UP. No one knew where the V5 registration had gone so the car couldn't be sold because it couldn't be taxed!
After 2 weeks they still can't find it, so I had to walk away.
If they were a commercial concern they would be out of business.

As someone else has said, the registration is linked to the date the car was first registered, not when the car was first registered in the UK.
However, the DVLA used to quite often get it wrong if it was a new car and would use the UK registration date to set the number plate.

It affected me the wrong way when my cyprus import was registered. I ended up with a newer reg date that put the car in the higher tax band by 8 days but without the benefit of a later reg number.
Sounds like your car was originally registered in a similar way but now the DVLA are actually doing it properly.
