From what I've seen of the three I've stripped and cleaned, clutch dust gets into the grease inside it and makes it stiff / slow to move, especially in the cold. I cleaned them out with WD40 until it ran clear then regreased with nice clean grease once it had dried out. It's a really dirty job though and some of the bits in there are razor sharp.

Simon - i think my current clean 'spare' is actually your original starter!
