Melted my Hub Centric Rings at the Track
Melted my Hub Centric Rings at Watkins Glen last weekend. They shrunk like shrinky dinks.
I have gotten replacements but I expect they will just melt again.
Anyone ever had this happen to them?

I have Volk CE28N wheels that are used exlusively for track and autocross. They came with aluminum hub adapter rings that I never used. I've had zero issues.
(Well, actually, they were used ONCE, when the shop put them on when I first got the wheels. I didn't know, so I put the stock wheels on over them and essentially compressed them onto the hub. What a complete PITA to take off. They weren't usable after that, and I never worried about it.)
If Volk is supplying plastic rings, which have zero structural ability, I suspect they're just to help with putting the wheels on.

I use the Volk aluminum rings with my CE28n wheels, track use only. No problems. I'll let others address the issue of hub-centric vs. lug-centric, but I'll stay hub-centric!

It was my understanding that the rings are used to keep the weight of the car on the hub and off of the studs.
My understanding is that the force holding up the car comes from the friction between the back of the wheel and the hub - neither the lugs nor the hubs have much to do with supporting the car, but are very useful for centering the wheel properly.
Of course, I could be wrong.

Volk is now only supplying plastic ones. I am considering having a fabricator make me alumnium ones but am concerned that metal on metal with different expanding rates from the heat could be a bad thing. I can only assume that is wht Volk went to plastic.
The hub centric rings exist only to center the wheel for mounting. They bear no load.
