Since this is the Under The Hood forum, most often people come here first when they get a check engine light. There are many misconceptions about the Check Engine Light, so hopefully this will address them, and help YOU provide us with the information we need so we can help you out.

First off, The Check Engine Light (which will be referred to as a CEL here on in) is NOT the same as your "Maintenence Req'd Light"!!!! The Maintenance light has to do with OIL Changes ONLY!!

So what to do if you get a CEL? First, look at the CEL. If it is blinking continuously, STOP and DO NOT DRIVE THE CAR!! A flashing CEL can be indicative of something catastrophic going on, and continued use of the engine or driving the car could exacerbate the problem and make the costs to repair it grow into a HUGE amount! If the CEL is blinking, you have no choice but to get it towed to the dealership to have it checked out and fixed.

Next, if you have a CEL that is not blinking, here is what you need to do. Drive to your local autozone or advance auto parts or some similar store, and tell them you have a CEL and you need to pull the code. They will pull the code for free. With a CEL it will usually be a "P" number, such as P1399 or something similar. Once you have this code, post it on the forums, along with a full list of your mods and any observations you've noticed about your car lately, or changes that you've made.

DO NOT post in the forum and say you have a CEL and you just installed new rims or a new exhaust and what's wrong with your car. Without the code NO ONE can tell you what's wrong. You installing a part could easily coincide with a sudden CEL. We need the code!

One of the most common things I hear people say is "I got a CEL so I reset my ECU but it came back, what's wrong!?" First, DO NOT EVER RESET A CEL OR YOUR ECU WITHOUT GETTING THE CODE FIRST!!!! A CEL doesn't just come on for no reason. It's an EXTREMELY important indicator that your car has something wrong with it. Just resetting the ECU will NOT make the code go away!! And more importantly it will not fix the problem!! Very recently, a member got a CEL and decided to reset it so his car would work properly and because he thought it would go away. The next time it came on, it was a flashing CEL and he'd caused major major damage to his car. He turned a very small problem into a big and costly problem by ignoring his CEL!

Another common question is "I just installed xyz part on my car and the CEL came on, what do I reset to make it go away?" Once again, another fallicy. A CEL does not come on as a "reminder" for you to reset your ECU just cuz you installed a part. Installing parts on your car do not require a reset of anything. Back to point number one, a CEL comes on for a reason. Something is wrong.

I will leave this thread open for a bit so I can get feedback and more info that I may have left out.

Per sendergreen:

Please note that the link provided in this thread (posted below) to Modifry's directions on jumping the OBDII dataport has the PINs labeled incorrectly. The PINs to jump are not PINs 1 and ?. The PINs to jump are PIN 9 (SCS wire) and PIN 4 (ground). This is not my opinion it is fact. OBDII is a standard and modifry's labelling scheme does not adhere to it. The procedure stated is correct with the exception of the PIN numbering scheme. I usually post this link for a K-series RSX http://www.k-series.com/tech_document.php?id=37 . Yes the procedure is the same for an S2000, in fact it is exactly what Modifry instructs you to do. However the PIN's in the RSX example are labeled correctly in accordance with OBDII standard. I think it also a good visual aid. I would still try and pull a DTC with a scan-tool if you can gain access to one.

This list is originally posted by Modifry and compiled from several reliable sources. It contains the Diagnostic Trouble Codes (CEL code as well as the pending code when the CEL is not yet on) as well as the blinking codes.

For your information: The CEL is formally known as the MIL or Malfunction Indicator Lamp.

PS: This is quite a long and helpful list, especially because of the DIY blink codes, however there can be errors in it!!
updated: P-code errors for TDC and air pump.

Thanks for posting that. I deleted our posts so yours would be bumped up under mine.

Also, people should know that is NOT a complete list. There are more codes than that.

I have the complete list in PDF as provided by Honda (Service Bulletin 03-020).

Let me know how I can send it to you so it can be available in The Library - Service Bulleting archive, with a direct link to it. It's a very comprehensive list. It even includes DTCs for automatic transmission, EGR and all the other stuff our cars don't even have. All S2Ki members should be able to have access to this list. Another good reason to become a member! ;)

Greetings,

Siepel

Posted this in another thread awhile ago. Don't know if this is what you're looking for. Cel's and the people who ignore them are my pet peeves :D

In my searches I came across this and thought I'd share.

This list is originally posted by Modifry and compiled from several reliable sources. It contains the Diagnostic Trouble Codes (CEL code as well as the pending code when the CEL is not yet on) as well as the blinking codes.

:iagree:

also note that on this page, it show you how to get the codes without a scanner. I used this method, and it saves a trip to autozone :D

Please note that the link provided in this thread to Modifry's directions on jumping the OBDII dataport has the PINs labeled incorrectly. I usually post this link for a K-series RSX http://www.k-series....php?Tech_ID=CEL .

Thank you Wisconsin :-)

Xviper said I should share this (from another thread. If it is out of place here please delete):
If you have an ABS, SRS, EPS DTC it can not only be retrieved using the jumper "blinky" trick, they can also be cleared. With the exception of an SRS DTC which is cleared via MES connector. Basically anywhere in the helms manual where it say's to use PGM Tester SCS method it say's to connect the PGM-Tester and use it to jump the SCS to ground, well when you do the jumper "blinky" trick you are jumping PIN9 (the SCS wire brown) to a ground PIN4. It is the same thing as connecting the PGM-Tester and having it ground the SCS for you.

EDIT: oh shoot I forgot, as far as I know nothing I have discussed this entire thread applies to MY06 or really anything beyond MY03 (my helms 00-03). Also never clear a DTC of any sort without first addressing the problem.

It came on right about 15,000 miles. I'm sure theres a simple way to reset it. I could not find it in my owners manual.

I have a 2.2 litre with comptech supercharger/after cooled. Upgraded gearing. Upgraded header. Stick exhaust. Have "solid"check engine light. Honda gave 2 codes... 1)Fuel metering out of spec 2) Too Lean I went & got a AEM Wide band UEGO to help tune the car & the day after getting it back It came on again.
Any suggestions why & what to do?
