Went to do a valve adjustment and discovered a cracked retainer.
Now I'm wondering whether I should replace my retainers with new OEMs or should I go with a set of Ti retainers?
Any experiences?
Thanks guys,
Aaron

Why do you think your retainers cracked?
Would retainers crack for no reason (no reason being never over-revving)?
i had my retainers replaced...but i don't remember if i got ap1 or ap2...i ordered from hardtopguy...should have made sure to get ap2's...oh well.
do you think hardtopguy would be able to pull up an invoice from 2004, assuming its all computerized and check for me? hehe, i guess i'll call him and ask...

I'm sure he will. Hardtopguy is awesome, I spent a long time on the phone with him today and we got on the subject of retainers.
Just to throw some fuel on the fire, he says he thinks the AP2 retainers will crack just like the AP1's do, and that he had a metal expert inspect AP1 and AP2 retainers to see if he should start recommending the AP2 as better and they found they were both pretty wimpy retainers.

isn't it 16 cotters and 8 retainer since only the intake side is needed?

i have cracked both ap1 and ap2 retainers.
the cracked ap2 retainers lasted 35000km in my case. just about to completely break too.. one more track day and my engine would probably been history.
check and change em regularly is my advice

In any event, I totally agree with you about checking the things regularly.
It only takes a few minutes to check them, so we do it as a part of every oil change. On a stock AP1 the inspection is only really needed after an over rev, but it's so easy to do, I consider it cheap insurance.
I don't think anyone here has ever seen a stretched/cracked AP2 retainer. Got any pics?

Are you stock? This is the first report I've seen of AP2 retainers cracking. On a stock AP1 the retainers usually only crack after a mechanical over rev.

BUT, my valve face was warped and my valve guides were warped...
go figure...the retainers were all fine.
