Default Titanium Retainers Revisited 4 years and 20,000

Four years ago we built my head with titanium retainers. At the time there were questions about life span of titanium retainers considering they gall where they contact the spring. At the time I decided to revisit them at 20,000 miles. These are my findings.

There is enough galling present to make me replace them. There was no safety issue at this time. It would have taken perhaps 50,000 miles more for one of them to fail. These are the worse two. If you click on the picture twice it will enlarge.

These retainers were worked out with frequent 9500 rpm sojourns.

These were custom made titanium retainers. No company offered them at the time. I replaced them with Skunk 2 titanium retainers. The original retainers were 7.1 grams and the Skunk 2's are 7.9 grams. I hate taking the weight back up.

did you find the little piece that broke off?

good info, thanks for the update. your car is a great test car considering the stress your motor can put on parts.

Nothing broke off. It just galled a little.

Thanks for posting. Hopefully this puts an end to the myth that Ti retainers are only good for 10000 miles.

True, but I still wouldn't want retainers that look like that in my car. That top one looks seriously unhealthy. I'd still say that the 10K marker would be a good time to check them for wear and determine if they need to be replaced. This isn't a mod that you can just throw in and forget about it.
