I'd be kind of afraid to use it.

I bought some. It's still 30 weight so once warm it has the same properties as 5 and 10/30 from what I can deduce. But, it is thinner when cold so it should help engine wear during cold startups.

The Advanced Fuel Economy badge is really nothing more than marketing designed to capitalize on current gas prices - it's like shooting fish in a barrel! You will not likely see much of a gas mileage improvement - especially during the summer months. You may see slightly better gas mileage in the colder months though (if you live where it gets cold).

Standard Mobil 1 is notorious for higher consumption, and this oil is not likely to be any better - which will cost you more in the long run. The overall viscosity of this oil is thinner than a 10W30 - regardless if it's badged as a "30 weight".

Mobil 1 is not alone in this market as Amsoil has pushed their 0W30 lines (previously their Series 2000 and now their "Signature Series" oils) with the same promise of improved gas mileage. I used it (Series 2000 back then) for one oil change in my S2000 back in 2004 - and then switched back. My oil consumption went up slightly, the oil was a lot more expensive, and my mileage didn't improve noticeably. Changing your driving habits is the best way to reduce your fuel consumption.

I don't think this oil will hurt your car - but you need to really monitor your oil consumption closely.

There is no such thing as "A 10W-30 grade oil"
They are all different, there are 10W-30 grade oils that are thinner (10.5 cSt) and thicker (12.1 cSt) and I just looked at the Castrol site.
This 0W-30 grade oil is thinner when cold but just as thick - or thin - at operating temp.
IOW: no problem

My Shell 0W-30 is around 9.6 cSt, and the UOA confirmed it actually thickened a bit to 10.2 cSt. after 19800 km.
That said, I didn't do a VOA so it might have been 10.2 all along as that margin probabaly is within production range.

Check oil level frequently regardless of type of oil used

Spitfire - quite true. It was a simplistic post at best.

It's no secret I'm not a fan of Mobil 1's current offerings, and this new oil smells of nothing but marketing. Their EP and Delvac lines are decent - but their standard lines are marketing and little more.

Unfortunately, the U.S. market currently doesn't offer as many high quality oils as the European market - to include the lineup of Castrol oils. The Shell synthetic you use is another good oil that I wish was readily available here. If the U.S. market offered more of these oils, the competition would drive better technology in motor oils. Instead, the best oils here are made by small companies and are not as easily purchased or found (according to those that don't like ordering online at least). For whatever reason - American's have to see it on a shelf at Walmart, Sams Club, or a Costco to buy it. Still haven't figured that one out yet.

Which do you prefer between Amsoil and Redline?

Amsoil unquestionably produces the best 10W30 available in the U.S. - hands down. Redline's 10W30 is great - likely second to Amsoil's - but is a lot more expensive.

Redline currently produces the best "5W40" motor oil - although it's specs look like a 10W40 rather than a 5W40. Marketing to move into the German market that requires a 5W40? The numbers would suggest so.

Another reason most people dont buy Amsoil or Redline is the high cost. Mobil 1 synthetic costs about $22 for a five quart jug, Castrol Syntec about the same but usually a little higher. Both have worked well for me, as well as regular castrol and Valvoline oil. Even the cheapo Super tech oil from Wal Fart has done ok in beater cars. I also dont use ultra thin viscosity oils in the summer. I always use 15w50 synthetic or in high miles beater cars, 20w50 castrol. I am sure both Amsoil and Redline are better oils but not worth double the price (at least seems like it) when a cheaper oil works just as fine for the street.
