Default Aluminum wheel failure after powder coating?

? Any Engineers want to bump in here...

I was doing some research on powdercoating my Volks, but this topic came up before on different places. Heating during the powdercoat baking process will compromise the strength/integrity of the the aluminum. what type of alloy does Volk use?

"There are plenty of opinions on this specific topic but, to my knowledge, zero published data/testing. So, we are left with extrapolating from the known properties of the materials.

Assuming the aluminum used is the industry standard of: 356-T6 or 356-T7 (cast) and 6061-T6 (forged). Both 356 and 6061 aluminum are heat treated (ageing) followed by air cooling to produce the T6/T7 temper. The 6061 T6 ageing is at 350

I have an example of your worst suspicions

AP2 V1's powder coated and autu-x'ed about 35 laps.

70% (7 of 10) spokes cracked.

3 of the 4 wheels had cracks. Worst one is pictured.

Luckily an observant friend spotted this as I was about to go out for another run!!!

WHEW!!!

It doesn't matter if they are forged or not. We had some SSR wheels that a customer sent back because they all 4 broke. He did not tell us that he had them painted. When we sent the wheels back to SSR for testing they were significantly weaker than original.
