0901 Grill block removed (engine heat steady at 234 degrees F, would overheat if traveling over 60mph, not suitable if emergency speed required)

So when he blows his engine from putting 800 miles per week at high running temperatures... how will that factor into his gas money saved?

If I was driving that "lightly" I'd rather put 87 octane to save some money rather than run the engine hot.

ahahah. blocking radiator flow is the stupidest "mod" I have ever heard of. What happens if he gets a bad batch of gas? or a small leak in the radiator? factor of safety just went down from like 1.2 to 1.000001.

What is a boat tail? I dont get how blocking the air flow into the radiator has increased his gas mileage by like 80% over stock...

Ummm doesnt higher octane fuel actually burn colder than lower octane?

From what I know we only use higher octane to prevent engine knocking given that it burns at a lower yet steadier rate.

I don't really understand what you're saying.

1. He's running his engine at >230 degrees. That's hot. Engines suffer when hot. Oil doesn't lube well when hot. He can't go over 60mph or put any load on the engine without it getting even hotter.

2. That's regardless of whatever octane he's running.

3. My point was that blocking the radiator to improve aero and improve gas mileage is robbing Peter to pay Paul.

4. If you wanted to save money on gas (without resorting to blocking off your radiator), you could run cheaper gas and drive like a granny... thereby not needing higher octane gas. Temps would be far lower than 230 because of effective cooling.

True.. you would save money with 87, but at the probable expense of engine knocking. Sure you can get away with it but who wants to feed their baby with fuel that knocks them upside the mouth

hope u guys understood my super lame pun! sry its the :reefer: , and lots of it

Hm. by the way, running lower octane actually INCREASEs gas mielage (as long as the car doesnt pull timing due to knockage). Lower octane fuel has a higher energy content, IIRC.

By the way, is this guy who did this who I think it is? Someone was asking earlier how to get the car to run hotter to get better gas mileage...hmm

When I worked at Ford, My delivery truck would get better MPG if I used 91. If I used 87 it would knock like crazy.

Amazing how most of you have nothing to contribute to his thread. Pretty cool to see that our cars have that kind of potential, I've actually been getting 26-27mpg city only but I don't really get on it at all.

You're not going to have "probable knocking" with 87 octane if you're driving in a manner that conserves gasoline.

That was the other part of my point.

Overheating is a great way to cause all sorts of problems.

With my bone stock AP1 and sport tires at 35psi I was able to squeak out 34 mpg all highway on the way back from the Dragon last year. I didn't have to create hazardous conditions for my engine to do it and averaged 67 mph.

it says there he's already removed the grill block and air dams because it was overheating above 60mph

basically he just has low RR tires and a removed passenger seat now it seems.
