Default How do you measure brake disc thickness

Not on my S they are fine, my gf said that the garage (dealer) told her the discs are on minimum thickness.

Now I remember them having a lip which is not too bad, but wonder if the garage is fishing for work. Pads have plenty of life in them and discs are not scored.

Is there a way of checking discs without a micrometer and checking if they need replaced? or should I just buy one?.

IIRC discs have the minimum thickness details etc on the side of the disc?

Thanks

I just run my finger along the edge of the disc - if there's a noticeable lip then its time to change them. Sorry, its not a very scientific method but it works for me

Max lip on both side shouldn't be over 1mm.

The min thickness should always be on the edge of the disk.

Micrometer or Vernier Caliper if they have the small cut out in the caliper.

Lips are not necessarily a problem, it may just mean that the discs need to be turned down, it you can find a miachine shop that will still do this. The only way to measure acurately is with wither a micrometer or vernier calipers. Min thickness should be stamped near the hub.

Lips come from pads that do not fully cover the surface of the disc. Not wishing to teach granny how to suck eggs mind you...

Use a micrometer, ebay for a tenner, alternatively if you have a vernier calliper, but have a lip on the disk, use a couple of ball bearings put a bearing on each the disk and measure the disk and bearings, fiddly yes, but works.
