For majority of the Asian manufacturers, a silicate free coolant is what is needed. Other salts, like phosphate, are included in the coolant packages, but due to aluminum erosion, silicate free is the critical criteria. Prestone sells a 'universal' that will probably work just fine. Would I use it and will it cause problems? No, but it isn't ideal and I'll drive to the Honda dealer for the right stuff.

If you can't make it to a Honda dealer, Valvoline has a product in it's Zerex coolant line that is specially formulated for Asian vehicles. I would have no reservations running that product.

mixing coolant in this day and age is like mixing engine oil.

will it work, yes. will the engine run, yes. should you do it, NO. why? they are different.

I'm using the Toyota Super Long Life (pink) in my S. Went thru the chemical data lists and they have the exact same specifications as the Honda Type 2 coolant. So far had no problems, but keeping my eye on it just in case it sludges up like some say. Time will tell.

Use the Honda type 2 if you don't want to deal with clogged heater core and radiator.

Personally, I use only OEM coolants spec'd for all my vehicles now.

If you could see the inside of my 2002 factory radiator sitting in my basement you would be hard pressed to differentiate it from a brand new radiator. It had Honda coolant in it for 8 years, I swapped it out when I bought the car 1.5 years ago. I just put in a Mishimoto rad as an upgrade.
