I've started to get pretty far into the car, so I decided I need a build thread. Let's start from the beginning...

I picked up the car in late August of 2008 from a private seller in Atlanta with approximately 36k miles. She wasn't in perfect condition, but the mileage was low, it was an AP1 (wanted the 9k redline), and the price was right. I drove her all the way home (back then, Gainesville, FL) with no problems and snapped these pics not too long after:

First mod was some new wheels (SSR GT1) and a nice coat of wax (pics taken right after):

Second thing I did was to get some tint and build a nice custom stereo. My goal was good sound quality without losing any trunk/storage space (since its already lacking in that department). With the current setups for the car this wasn't possible. So I did some custom work with the help of my buddy Davian @ IMVFilms. This is what I ended up with:

Build thread (more pics and info): http://www.s2ki.com/...howtopic=722671

Metal/Rock demo:

Rap demo:

I had a string of shitty luck though towards the end of 2009... Had a car in front of me on I75 throw some tire tread up and f@#k up my fender (replaced under insurance, thank god), then FUBAR'd a spark plug and melted a coil (due to an old recall that never got performed), then had the power for my stereo ground out at the battery in the engine bay and melt the battery post, then had a 90 year old man hit me head on (damage wasn't too bad, just f@#ked up the front bumper and one of the lights), and then some major engine problems (rod knock/spun rod bearing; vid). :(

I let the car sit in my garage for a several months due to my indecision on what to do to fix it (rebuild or replace engine).

While she was down though I swapped the lights out with some that have audi style LEDs, and have been painted gloss black on the inside (vs the stock flat gray) and had the diffusers smoked (trying to get rid of all that orange; I like the black on black on black etc look).

Here is how she sat after that:

Finally, after researching some and thinking it all through, I decided swapping the motor was a better alternative than rebuilding the old one, since the F20Cs were prone to spinning rod bearings anyways, and I could upgrade to the F22C without any modifications and barely any extra money (vs rebuilding the messed up F20C).

So I bought a bare F22C longblock from a salvage car with 23k (documented) miles on it. and mounted all my accessories on it:

I got that swapped in the car and drove it around like that for over a year with no problems.

10/17/2010:

Fairly recently (September of 2010), I decided that I wanted to turbo the car... so after lots of research on what I wanted, and lots of saving, I pulled the trigger on a used kit...

The parts list:
  • Garrett GT3076R (.60 a/r) Dual Ball Bearing Turbo
  • AEM 1052U Engine Management System
  • AEM 30-4300 Serial Gauge (2)
  • ACT Heavy Duty Pressure Plate
  • ScienceOfSpeed Dual Gauge Pillar Pod
  • ScienceOfSpeed 3BAR MAP Sensor
  • RC 750cc Injectors
  • Walbro 255lph Fuel Pump
  • Marshall 100PSI Fuel Pressure Gauge
  • B&M CommandFlo Fuel Pressure Regulator
  • Rev Hard™ Cast Iron Manifold
  • Rev Hard™ Oil Filter Relocation
  • Rev Hard™ Intercooler (28x6.5x3)
  • Tial 38mm Wastegate
  • Vortech Blow-Off Valve
  • 2.25" Mandrel Bent Intercooler Piping
  • 2.5" Downpipe

I know it may seem crazy to some of you looking at the parts list and imagining how much it all cost, but this was actually a budget build. Other than the piece of shit GReddy kit, this is probably the cheapest kit out there. Granted, some of the parts (like the turbo and standalone) are upgraded from the typical Rev Hard kit, but pretty much everything was bought used, and thus this is a pretty inexpensive build for an S2000...

With saving money comes a toll though. Because of most of the parts being bought used, there were many kinks that normally would not have been a problem. Wrong/broken/missing parts made this build a lot more time consuming and difficult than it need have been. Waiting on the new parts to come in the mail was dreadful... but it was totally worth it in the end. Even though I know all my parts aren't the best of the best, and my car isn't the fastest out there, I'm okay with that...

When I first started planning this build my whole goal wasn't to make huge numbers or be the fastest. It was simply to have quick spool and decent reliability, so as to maintain the car as a good daily driver, while still making it a bit faster. So far I'm very satisfied, and I think it has met my goals very well...

Anyways, enough of that... now for the pictures!

First time dropping the turbo and new manifold in:

The car was initially tuned and running on 7psi, but after the clutch was broken in properly I promptly had it upped and retuned on 10-12psi.

Car will be dyno'd as soon as another dyno day gets setup locally that I can make it to. I'll add the numbers and sheet ASAP after that.

For anyone who made it the whole way through the thread, thanks for your interest. I'll try and keep the thread fairly up to date.

I still have lots of plans for the car, and although its a DD right now, I'm hoping to get a 2nd car (or maybe a bike) to daily, so I can do some weight reduction, and turn it into a more serious street (race) car, and/or a mostly track/weekend car.

2/6/2011:

Stock exhaust was really restricting the turbo, so I decided I needed something that flowed better.

I decided to go ahead and upgrade my downpipe too. Nothing off the shelf really met my criteria and was kind of expensive so I wanted a custom 3" exhaust made all the way from the turbo back.

The muffler I chose was a 3" Vibrant Streetpower Black Oval (#1147) with a 3" Vibrant Ultra Quiet Resonator (#1142).

I'll try and get pics on the car and a sound clip up ASAP.

No, wheels are fine...just the gold color isn't the best. What do you think of the quality of the RevHard manifold?

RevHard manifold seems pretty damn good. Especially for the money. I'd say probably almost as good as inline pro's cast manifold. Not worth the extra money IMO. Cast manifolds are pretty basic.

3/26/2011:

I was going to buy new wheels, but then I found the deal of a lifetime... on an Inline Pro Differential Kit. I couldn't pass it up.

Parts:
  • InlinePRO Differential Billet Mounts
  • Nissan R200 Differential
  • Driveshaft Shop Level 5.9 Pro-Series axles with hubs (rated for something crazy like 1000hp I think)
  • Driveshaft Shop Driveshaft
  • ARP Extended Wheel Studs

We started off by ripping all the old shit (driveshaft, diff, axles, hubs, rotors, etc.) off the car on Friday night....

Oh shit, what have we done?!?!? Lol...

Posted Image

New diff (R200 from a 91' n/a 300ZX) with the InlinePro mounting hardware on it:

The driveshaft:

Posted Image

Posted Image

After all the tear down on Friday we waited until Saturday to put all the new parts back on. We started by bolting the new diff up to the driveshaft. Looking good...

Posted Image

Posted Image

Then we stuffed it all back up in there and put everything back together.

Here is the end product, all installed and on the car:

As always, I gotta say thanks to everyone who helped my on this. The guys from TrackTUNED are really great. As I've said many times before, my car would be nothing without them. They're always ready and willing to tackle whatever automotive project I need, and always do a great job.

Anyways, yeah that's pretty much it. Unfortunately I apparently didn't get any pictures of the new axles off or on the car, but they look pretty much the same, so its not a big deal. As typical, my build posts are pretty short and to the point anyways.

So yeah, my driveline has successfully been beefed up a little. Unfortunately now that means the weak point is the transmission... but I'd much rather break the trans than a diff or axle. I doubt I'll be able to afford to upgrade the trans for a loooooong time, but then again that's what I said about the diff, so I guess we'll see. :D

Looks like I just need to test it out now... ;)

props on the nice build. although imo the exhaust looks a tab bit low. but i spent about 4 hours cutting and welding my 3 inch to fit up in hondas little hole. was worth the effort in the long run. i prefer to hit the frame instead of crushing the exhaust haha. car looks great though. you did it right.

So I went to my first autocross last month on May 15th.

My buddy Arty let me use his GoPro. Here is my best run:

Overall I don't think I did too bad for my first time out. It was a lot of fun, but I definitely have a lot of room for improvement though.

The next weekend, May 21st, we went down to Orlando to RealStreet Performance to dyno.

Here was my best run maxing out at ~11psi (on a dyno that is setup to show real world numbers, not fudge factor, fantasy world b.s. numbers):

Posted Image

Overall very happy with the car and how its been performing. Definitely need a new front sway though. The tons of oversteer at the autocross was driving me nuts.

...

In other news, my Whiteline sway got installed today. First impression is that the car feels much more planted. We'll see if those feelings are confirmed at the next autocross.

Wilwood 4 piston BBK is next on the list. Hoping to have it purchased and installed in a few weeks time. Maybe more depending on funds. We'll see.

I'm not seeing the pics of your turbo install (post #2). Do you think you can post them back up? I'm going with a similar setup and would like some reference pics. Thanks.

All previous photos that were down have been re-uploaded to another host. Let me know if they go down again.

I also previously forgot to mention that I got new wheels. I needed more tire and the old wheels weren't cutting it, so I found these. They are iForged FS6 wheels. As far as I know, I think they are the only set in S2000 spec. Only others I've seen were 19s.

Specs are:
Rear - 17x10 +75 275/40-17
Front - 17x8 +54 235/45-17

And here is a pic on the RealStreet DynoJet:

...

8/30/2011:

I switched over to E85, changed to some 1000cc FIC injectors, and upped the boost to ~16psi.

Here are the results on a Mustang dyno:

Posted Image

Would likely be ~400whp on a DynoJet. Not too bad for a log manifold... Still not sure I'm happy with it though. Currently exploring the options for upgrading to a tubular manifold.

Wow awesome car, how much did it cost to buy all the parts for the turbo and have it put in?

Thanks. Not sure exactly. Definitely quite a bit, but probably not as much as you think. I'm all about building on a budget and getting the most for my money.

Even now, I'm quite sure that my grand total for parts (even with the diff kit and all), is substantially less than most of the full turbo kits out there (ex: Ptuning).

Very happy with the et/trap... especially since I was on mediocre street tires. Going to try and go back with drag radials soon, just to see the best I can do with the current turbo setup. Doubt I'll be upgrading the car to make more power anytime soon. Suspension and tires are next on the list.
