I saw the accident. The worst I've ever seen and I've been following racing for over 40 years. Dan was such a great driver and gentleman. He won Indianapolis this year. He's done all the testing on the new 2012 Indy car. There was a $5.0 million bonus split between him and a fan if he won. What a great tragedy. RIP Dan.

I'm going to come out and say it: 34 cars is too many for a 1.5 mile oval with 20° banking.

I was watching this live and literally yelled out loud when this crash happened. I felt so empty when they covered one of the cars, I just knew something was very bad. Worst I have ever seen, by far. The live broadcast was showing the in-car view from Weldon when the first contact was made too. .

RIP Dan.

No doubt about it.

RIP Dan Wheldon
"I am a most unhappy man. I have unwittingly ruined my country. A great industrial nation is controlled by its system of credit. Our system of credit is concentrated. The growth of the nation, therefore, and all our activities are in the hands of a few men. We have come to be one of the worst ruled, one of the most completely controlled and dominated Governments in the civilized world - no longer a Government by free opinion, no longer a Government by conviction and the vote of the majority, but a Government by the opinion and duress of a small group of dominant men."

My thoughts are with Dan's young family. I hope they receive the $2.5 million bonus, even though no money can change the day's tragedy.

At Indy on carb day this year Dan pulled up hurredly at a urinal right next to me in the garage area restroom and then ran out to practice.

Seeing Dario weeping in the car before the drivers' five-lap tribute got the tears flowing for me.

I turned the TV on not 30 seconds before the crash happened, and couldn't believe my eyes. Very sad day, RIP Dan.

So sad to this happen. I saw it live and before the race the correspondents had him mic'd in the car and were interviewing him before they waved green flag. It was going to be an exciting race today for Dan and his fans to see him back. I cannot believe he's gone.

RIP Dan Wheldon

I was within 100 or so feet when the crash had happened (pit/garage side) and cannot even find the words to express my reaction and others around me when it had occurred. The sound and smell was insane. RIP Dan.

It's hard to imagine. He made it on his own, his own way and was a champion through and through.

Maybe it's time to eliminate ovals from the series and only run on road and street courses.

Very sad, very sad indeed
It's a tragedy anytime the racing community looses one of their own
I'll reserve my thoughts about going 200+ mph in a circle, inside a fenced in barrier
Calling the race and doing a 5-lap memorial was a wonderful thing to see, most impressive
It is going to be a long off season for a lot of drivers in Indy Racing I'm afraid,
that is to say this is never easy, but being the last race has to make it worse because
they will not be forced to get back on the horse in a couple weeks

it definitely was, S2ks were used to parade each one of the Indy drivers around the track for an opening ceremony ( I got charlie kimball). We were all staged in-field/pitside after the parade lap so we all had a first hand view of when the crash happened.

heres a pic of the staging area

I had the privilege of hanging out with him a few times, my wife was friends with one of his wife's friends when we lived in St. Pete, FL. Humble guy, nice guy and really loved automobiles. When I asked him what it was like to race Indy cars. He told me that it was what he always wanted to do and that he was living his dream. You have to admire someone that gets do what they love and enjoys every minute of it.
