Hey guys,

As promised, I'm starting this thread to invite those of you over that want to come help/watch me tear the engine out of my car and hopefully start disassembly to figure out what went wrong and why she's not breathing anymore. I am planning on doing A LOT of work this Friday. I'm hoping a lot of you will have off due to Thanksgiving being Thursday. Just post up if you're going to be able to make it and you can either text me or PM me for the address.

Pretty much ALL day.....

David,
Come over after work.... I think I'm going to be really aggressive and pull the intake & exhaust manifolds first, then pull the head off. That'll just leave the short block to pull off the Transmission which should be a lot more manageable.

We are throwing up a building at my brothers, talking about 30x50 building, 14ft high roof: I'll have to see where we get by then but if it looks like it's just going to be some siding and stuff left, I'll come up there after 3pm.

Engine is almost all the way out/torn apart. All that's left is the short block, nothing is attached to it anymore other than the transmission and the two motor mounts. Should have it completely out on Tuesday. From what I can tell from up top, #2 Cyl. is where the issue occurred, looks like a rod bearing or something as there is some minor scoring to #2 cylinder. Nothing too terrible though. Honestly, I think a hone will get rid of it completely. It's not even enough to really catch a fingernail on. So as long as the journals on the block and bottoms of the cylinders aren't screwed up, I should be good to go with a new bearing set, and some new rods and pistons. Of course as a precaution I will upgrade the oil squirters/banjo bolts as well. The head looks great as suspected and no issues with that. So keeping my fingers crossed, it doesn't look AS bad as it surely could have been.

Sounds like it could have been a lot worse. At least you know how to fix it yourself so you're not out all that money as well. Got any pics of your torn apart ride? :ponder:

Sorry I wasn't able to come help, we are trying to get a roof and siding on a building before it starts pouring down rain this weekend! I'd love to see pics of the it as well!

Here's some pics I took along the way with my cell phone. The last two pics show #2 cylinder, disregard the oil on the piston as that drained down from the spark plug tube from a bad spark plug seal.

Well, the motor should last for awhile after this rebuild! Sucks it had to happen, but atleast like Russ said, you can do most of the work yourself to save a lot of cash

Yep! That's why I'm not all that upset. I know what'll be in it and know it'll be good to go. Definitely wondering if the oil squirters played a role in this.... We'll see I guess, but either way they will definitely be upgraded....

Doesn't look like I'll need the head Peter. Mine is in perfect shape as I suspected. I had just upgraded to the AP2 retainers and keepers, so it wouldn't make sense for it to have been bad other than if a piston hit the bottom of the cylinder head, which thankfully didn't happen.

Did you figure out what seized it? To be honest, scored cylinder walls usually allow the pistons to move up and down still, as long as it isn't gulled (which yours looks like it's fine).

Pretty sure it's a bearing that caused it to seize. Before I started the tear down I bumped it a few more times with the starter and got it to maybe bump a half a revolution, so it's not really seized completely. I'm guessing rod bearing on #2 went bad/spun/God only knows what, and now the rod is somewhat wedged against the bottom of the cylinder. We'll see, it certainly looks like everything is still in time and connected to the crank. Time will certainly tell.

Trans and Engine are out! Thursday I will be pulling the oil pan and stripping the rest of the block. Shouldn't be more than a couple hours of work. Then I'll know exactly what happened to cause my issues....
