Hey guys i have a 2001 S2000 and I want to upgrade the stock alarm( not sure if it even has one?).
What would be the best alarm for our cars and where would you recommend installing it in Sydney?

I would have to say a hardtop is my best alarm choice coupled with the factory immobilizer.

I'm getting a Mongoose MAP80S installed in a couple of weeks. It has a 2 stage shock sensor, which will be good for when the car is parked with the roof down. It will use the factory remotes too. I'll let you know how it goes.

What sort of cost are you looking at for alarm + install if you don't mind me asking?

I will give you an insight on how I deal with alarms.

If you can't see it.......don't park it

I understand if your car is a daily and that's not a luxury for you then I would recommend anything with a pager system that rings on your keys to inform you something is happening, what's the point of an alarm if it goes off and you have no idea?

- Just make sure you get somebody decent to install it. Sure it's easy enough to wire in but making it look like stock loom is another thing. Doesn't matter if you have a pager, GSM, laser beams - it's all useless if a monkey installed it (usually in clear view of the steering column).
- As with the above, ensure the loom is not easily traceable. Ie. 1 point immobilisers with coloured wiring (Which seem to be Viper's pager alarm series flavour of the century). Sure you can setup relays to make up extra points but find the trigger to the relays and it's all useless. Coloured wiring just make it even more obvious.
- If a thief wants it, he/she will get it. A GT-R was stolen in broad daylight from a shopping centre half a year ago on a flatbed tow truck even though it had an alarm going off. People were around but just didn't care... the best thing you can do is put things in place to slow them down such as making it as difficult as possible to move (use steering lock to your advantage, the alarm of course, park at certain spots that would make a tow truck difficult to get to, hand brake, leave in gear etc).
- It's hardER to resell a stolen car unless the VIN plates are swapped. So most likely, people will want to part out the car. If you've got mods... keep it low key. Otherwise you're just presenting a shopping list for potential thieves really.
- If you're at home, lock it up. If you spot people driving past your place at random hours with a keen eye on what's in your driveway... take down numberplates if you can or even make it known that you've spotted them. From the stories I've heard, most thefts are planned and not random acts... so there's bound to be some scouting done before hand. It makes sense to increase your chances of success... so equally plan against a theft
