Can anyone give me some recommendations on where I can take my AP1 head to get it serviced (valves, guides, etc)? I am pulling the head today and expect to find bent valves in #2 cylinder. I need someone fast too as I need to have this running by Feb 6th (8 days!). :surprised:

The reason for the rush is I need to take it to T1 Race Development in Dallas for a retune (smaller SC pulley & injectors). I've had to wait 6 weeks for this tune date and don't want to miss it & have to wait another 2 months for the next date.

Thanks so much!
Chris

The only shops in the OKC area I would bother with are:

Folks Automotive Machine in Norman (these guys do NASCAR/Race engines. They're the SHIT)
541 12th Avenue Northeast
Norman, OK 73071-5243
(405) 329-2287 ‎

or see if Blumenthals can do it. I don't know if they do machining like that or if they only do crate engines, but certainly worth the call:
504 S.W. 4th
Oklahoma City, OK 73109
(405) 236-4800 or (888) 236-4800

Thanks guys. However, I already found someone.

I had a friend that did extensive head work on his Ferrari 308 and he recommended Bill Sims of Sims Automotive. He said that Bill was the only guy in town that would attemt a 12 angle valve job :ponder: & do specifically what he asked. Bill has been doing heads since 1958 and is considered the local guru on foreign heads. I understand that many shops around town will send the tricky stuff over to him. I took the head to him yesterday morning and he spent 3 hours with me inspecting it and explaining everthing to me. I trust he will do it right. I ordered a complete valvetrain from Supertech (dual springs, Ti retainers, valves, guides, etc) and it should be delivered today. Hoping to get the head back on Thursday so I can put all this back together. Fun stuff!!

Chris

Keep us updated with the results, are you just rebuilding with aftermarket parts in an attempt to make it stronger?

Yes, just want to make it stronger. I read too many threads about bent valves and broken retainers. I find this transmission is easy to miss shift and I like to wind it up. Hoping the upgraded valvetrain will give me some insurance. Plus at 81,000 miles, I figured it should all be replaced with the good stuff since it was already out.

I am not 100% convinced that my miss was due to just the valves though. On a compression check I hit 230, 190, 230, 230 (all were 230 3 weeks ago). 190psi in #2 is not good but the motor was missing so bad that it sounded like one cylinder should have 0 psi. So, I would not be surprised if it still misses when I get it back together. If it does, I am thinking it could be a coil pack or fowled plug. Any other ideas on this would be appreciated. :ponder:

plugs, coil packs, injectors is the usual order for checking. I have a few extra coil packs if you need me to mail them to you to help diagnose.

rebuilding your head usually comes after those ;)

I appreciate the offer to mail the coil packs. I don't want to put you out any trouble. If I need to test, maybe somebody local can come over & we can swap some out.

I would have checked those things before pulling the head but the low compression in #2 (and the miss shift the day before) lead me to beleive it was all valve or piston related. I also have less than 200 miles on the current plugs (copper).

Good to hear you found a reputable shop you feel comfortable with (that's always the hardest...I've found plenty of reputable shops...few I'd trust the engine off my lawnmower to, much less my S)

I posted a reply but it's not showing. Humm.

Bill Sims at Sims Automotive is THE guy in OKC that specializes in speciality/custom heads. I would not take it to anyone else in OKC. His rates are very good and he will welcome you into the shop & explain everything. You can easily spend hours talking to him. Great guy.

The miss turned out to be a coil pack. $110 at O'reilly and I was back on all cylinders.

No regrets on the head as I had 4 cracked retainers and several bent valves.

The engine screams now!!
:)

Had it aligned on Monday at Eurosport. Now I am ready for the BMT Tour!!
Chris.
