This is how I understand it: If the "cooler" uses coolant for temp control (ie OEM oil cooler), it actually helps warm the oil to operating temps quicker on cold days since water heats up a lot quicker then oil does. The heat from the already warm coolant transfers to the oil. That same coolant can help cool the hot oil back down to operating temps of the coolant. So the oil cooler in this case is more of a oil temp stabilizer IMO than just a "cooler".
