Alright just to give you some background my ap1 is currently at 121k I was at the verge of selling my car just because I felt like the s2000 wasnt much an interest to me anymore but a buddy of mine sparked my interest in it again now I decided to keep it and hopefully turbo it in the future. I'm still a broke college student so it'll take me a while to get all the things I want done so right now I just want to make sure my motor will be able to handle the boost with its high mileage. The s2000 is not my daily I drive it on the weekends when I feel like it so down time is not an issue. I have no mechanically issues what so all right now all fluids have been changed diff, trans, engine, radiator. Although I have yet to change my retainers which I am doing within the next couple weeks or so. I'm replacing both the exhaust and intake side and was wondering what else I should replace while I have it opened up and also OEM vs aftermarket. Valveguides, springs,or any seals or gaskets...etc? I searched but didnt come up with anything with much detail. Any links or info would be greatly appreciated!

info on my car not sure if it helps
03 ap1
121k
Parts that have been replace:
clutch master cylinder
slave cylinder
clutch oem (will be upgrading once the car is boosted)
flywheel lightweight competition
spark plugs, fluids, all regular maintenance

mods:
I/h/e

Thanks in advance

For the retainers, you only need to upgrade the intake side to AP2 retainers/keepers.

From what I've read, only the intake side fails. Just changing things for piece of mind doesn't make sense.

Assuming it hasn't been done, I would replace the pre-cat O2 sensor. O2 sensors last rated from Bosch 100,000 miles. After than I've heard every thousand miles it loses 2-3% efficiency which leads to poor fuel economy, performance, idle, and the car running rich or lean. AutoZone has the Pre-Cat O2 for 113.00 from Bosch that is an exact fit. I am replacing mine. Im getting bad mileage.

Well what I put in my s2k is half Shell V-Power and half Chevron with Techron. V-Power + Techron = VTEC! :D

I'm not trying to be a dick. My point is that the exhaust side doesn't crack from over reving like the intake side does. If you over rev your motor enough you'll get valve float and bend your valves first way before you can crack your exhaust side retainers.

And, I'm sorry to be the one to inform you of this, but you don't own this thread, so you should learn to play nice.

I would do a valve adjustment. Maybe fluid swaps if you haven't done so. Tranny / diff / and TCT. Brake fluid. Coolant. Pretty much all the little stuff that do the big jobs. I just hit 120ish and my TCT started making noise. So that's 1st on my to do list. Then valve adjustment.

I also think a tune up should be in hand. Plugs. Throttle body cleaning. Maybe even a induction flush. I did one on my engine and it feels like it runs better. A clean motor is a happy motor. :)

+1 If it ain't broke, don't fix it, because you might actually break it :)

Read Billman's response:

Change intake side only. Using AP2 retainers on the exhaust side will lower the float RPM it takes to bend them. It would defeat the purpose. The idea is to raise the over-rev RPM that can cause hidden damage.

Make sense?

Air filter check
Plugs check
Tranny/ diff check

TCT is on my do to list

Off the top of my head... Here is what you should do to make your car run like new (read the manual + diy's for these):

  • valve adjustment (and do the retainer swap according to Billmans instructions)
  • Replace your TCT with billmans modified (do the core exchange) if and only if you have the ticking symptoms
  • diff fluid change
  • tranny fluid change
  • regrease + sand-down your clutch slave (http://www.s2ki.com/...y-clutch-pedal/)
  • regrease your shifter (http://www.s2ki.com/...se-shifter-diy/)
  • change your brake fluid
  • change your clutch fluid
  • oil change
  • techron treatment and/or seafoam (before oil change)
  • clean your throttle body
  • clean your IAC valve
  • replace PCV valve
  • re/adjust your throttle cable (back into spec)
  • alignment + proper tire pressure
  • change air filters (cabin + intake)
  • brake pads/rotors/etc. as needed
  • spark plugs! (use the OEM ones)
  • buy HarryD a beer

I have no idea yet I am still debating if I want to attempt to do it on myself with someone that has done it before or just find a shop I can trust ive had some bad experiences with shops in the past so most likely will be attempting it on my own. I have the manual already and will be using the DIY thread.

Dont forget your upkeep for the interior and exterior of the car too! The s2k looks sexy even though its 12 years old! A little bit of 303 on the soft top makes it look like brand new.

I also added spark plugs to my list.

And +1. I bought the Lexol leather cleaner, conditioner, and vinyl cleaner kit from Amazon:

My seats look much better after I clean + condition them and vinylex the dash and vinyl trim!

Again, if your nearing 100,000 miles change the Pre-Cat Oxygen Sensor, not post cat. You should notice a better experience (efficiency, power, and mostly fuel economy)
