Nothing is wrong with getting an R1 as a first bike. My 19 year old friend has had one since he was 17 and he just rides safely with full gear. He's NEVER been on the freeway, just not comfortable with the idea yet. He only uses it to go around town and to pick up chicks Hahah. You just have to be careful. He's never dropped it or had any dangerous mishaps. But if a person is addicted to speed and wants a first bike then the R1 isn't for them.

Your friend shouldn't own that R1. If he's too afraid of it to ride it on the highway, he's too afraid of it to know how to handle it properly. By the way, the highway is the safest place to ride a motorcycle.
very true. You probably disagree, but at least he wears his gear. Probably shouldnt have passengers though, especially inexperienced passengers, if he's not comfortable with the bike.

No cross streets, no driveways, no cars pulling away from a curb and cutting you off, traffic traveling in one direction. Boring...but safe.

Starterbikes really depend on the rider. If you're a normally safe, sensible, and have already well developed defensive driving techniques - there's no reason to avoid a liter bike. You grow into the bike. Literbike saftey in two words : THROTTLE CONTROL. It's only more dangerous if you twist it more. The acceleration is not so much more agressive than a 600 as a 600, it's just got a meatier band. You're not any safer on a 600 IMO, they're both equally nuts. Hell, the 600's these days are so easy to ride- maybe they're actually more dangerous since you'll think you're superman sooner.
I disagree with the highways being safer. As speeds increase so does the severity of incidents, and so does the likelyhood of being able to avoid them. On the street - Yes more shit is likely going to happen, but it's usually at lower speeds where braking and manuevering are more viable - in addtition to lower speeds being less likely to maime you for life. I don't fart around on the highways unless they are empty at 3:00AM. I commute daily, and the highways are just as nuts if not more nuts than streets with traffic control devices.

Highway I see it being safer than local traffic. Living in Seattle, people do not know how to drive in non highway traffic or just in general but the highway will leave you more room to adapt to any incoming idiots on the road. Be safe when riding is the most important thing!

I say go bike, ride safe! Oh and if you do go boost, I vote supercharging over turbo... I think it's the right amount of power for the car.

a 600 isnt even a good 1st bike either. not sure what you think "handling it ok is" but there are few people that can truly master a 600 let alone 1000.
to the OP if you do decide to get a bike please make sure to wear your gear at all times.
riding can be an incredibly rewarding experience. personally id sell my S way before id consider selling my bike.

The highway is still scary as anything else to me. The track feels the safest, lol.

I had 3 bikes so far, a 1996 ninja 250,2000 CBR F4i, and a 2005 zx6r. I sold them all during past 4 years, bought a 2003 jeep, a 2004 toyota celica GT,and now my beloved 2000 s2k. By far the s2k is the best devestment i have ever made! Wouldnt mind having a bike and an s2k though. If only money let me.. I had plans to make a white/red/black cbr this summer to match my s2k but its just to expensive. It was either a Greddy Ti-c exhaust, and headers, a bike or 3000 in my pocket lol i picked the money..
