God there are some very sad scremongering buggers on here lately.

I had a low oil light on my big bimmer last week, after a long run following an oil change.

Big deal. I put a litre in.

To be fair to us scremongering (sic) buggers, the orange oil level light symptom wasn't made clear initially and it was explicitly stated there was 'bugger all oil' in it. The latter would surely be enough for any sane individual - let alone a scaremonger - to reject the car.

I'm also guessing that m1bjr knows the history of his own motor. I get oil-warning lights on the Touran from time-to-time - I top-up, I carry on, no worries because I know it's never been abused.

OP does not.

To be honest it had never entered into my head that the car had been abused in any way and that was why the oil level was quite low.

How does anyone (m1bjr included) know the full history of the used car that you buy? You don't.

That's why I always make sure I buy a car with a warranty in place incase anything bad happens.

Other than tell-tales (noises, smoke, oil consistency, service history inconsistent with what's in front of you, wear that's inconsistent with mileage, anything inconsistent with an HPA check), no-one can know whether what they buy has been abused, I agree.

I merely point out that it's not unreasonable for posters here to suspect the possibility based on your description and provide a risk-averse opinion.

A warranty is certainly good risk mitigation but not a perfect one and neither are all warranties the same.

If you are happy that you've seen nothing to suggest the possibility of abuse then by all means hang onto it - I would as well.

I never buy cars from dealers, unless they are brand new. If you know what you're looking for, and want better value, buy private every time  Something like an Edition 30, I can understand buying from a main dealer, they aren't what you call the most reliable cars in the world in comparison to Japanese or Korean stuff. The warranty then is a necessity and I would say a risky car without it, regardless of its history. I've had 3 VAG's, all of them Golf's... all of them had silly issues (weak water pumps, impellers,... a few other things related to engine). They weren't bought from dealers but I was expecting what went wrong, to go wrong anyway (alot of weak points).
If you remap the thing, its advisable not to hammer it everywhere all of the time... the crank bearings are under the most stress and 300hp through the front wheels gets a bit difficult to stop torque steering.
Why didn't you get an S3, if you like the VAG thing?

I like the looks of the Golf over the S3, plus the S3 would be a good bit more expensive :)

What was wrong with the Type-R, Darlo?

The heaters/blowers etc stopped working and despite over 20 hours of labour (16 of which was done by Honda) they could not make it work for longer than 2 days.

sorry for hijack!

Lemme guess; thermistor kept blowing & they couldn't work out why?

Normally once replaced, they're fine again.

Good luck with the MINI.

And even more of an unreliabler, expensive PoS in many cases, it would seem.

The crank bearing thing surprises me not - it's a lot of BHP and VAG engines have always been rather long-stroke, beyond 1,588cc.

To be fair I think the puncture is just bad luck.

Good news.

I've just spoken to the VW dealer and they have given the car the thumbs up.

It had a major service done to it today and an inspection the the oil sensor, check for leaks etc and all good.

Fingers crossed they know what they're talking about and I'm all good to go and I can now fully enjoy the car :burnrubr:

Renault and Ford are working on a new small car for women.
Its a combo car --
Theyre starting with the Renault "Clio".
Then adding luxury features from the Ford "Taurus".
The result will be sold as the "Clitaurus".
It only comes in pink.
The main benefit of the new hybrid: the average car thief wont be able to find it, even if someone tells him exactly where it is.

I wasn't meaning anything against you at all mate, maybe I didn't phrase what I meant in quite the right way, I'll have another go:

Me, you, another guy, yet another guy - none of us can really know the full history of the used cars we buy!

:D

That's the sort of modern-day internet equivalent of Holocaust Denial! Cherman cars must be vorshipped at all times...

Hondas are getting a lot shitter of late though, it's true. And there may be some evidence that the vages are getting less scabby, but their US reputation is still terrible.

I think the problem with Vages is that they have a couple of known, repetitive and expensive weakness - but outside of those, not a lot goes wrong at all.

Which sounds very much like an S2K and it's dear old bushes to me.

Good to hear things are taking a turn for the better. My comment re rejection were based on an oil pressure light, not lvl warning.

Here's hoping it turns out to be a good one. Keep an eye on the oil lvl though, it clearly has an S esque thirst :D

Taking it for a run up to Dundee / St Andrews tomorrow to get a VW sat nav system fitted so will have a chance to have a good play with the car :drive:
