Default Just finished valve retainer inspection on my ap1

Engine has 55,000 miles. All is well, everything looked good. I referenced a few good threads around here first that had some good pics of good and bad retainers. Still considering the AP2 retainer upgrade, but it's nice to know I am good for now. Took about an hour.

Does anyone think it is worth the added protection to do the AP2 retainer upgrade since my car is just a weekend car that doesn't see any track or autocross time? For the most part, as long as I don't over-rev (like shifting from 3rd to 2nd at 9k rpm)I should be ok right?

Correct, the retainers can last the life of the motor if not over-revved / abused. No need to change them if they are fine and you drive properly.

As long as the retainers are perfectly fine I wouldnt worry about a single thing.

yup, the issues only occur when theres a mechanical over-rev...as stated before, if you know how to drive there will be no issues with the retainers

Only you can make that decision: spend the money and time now to know that it's done or always have that thought in your head. Should of would of could of. I did mine just for peace of mind.

Good luck

The only true upgrade between the retainers - and cotters - is the difference in angle ratio.
The new ones give more binding force.

Whatever retainer you use: they will not prevent the valves from slamming shut - uncontrolled by the cam - during an overrev = possible seat damage.

+1 I did mine and I had no cracks at 103k miles. Necessary? Probably not but my motor tested strong so I wanted it done. Peace of mind.

Also, SpitfireS is correct in his post as well. If you make a money shift it will cost you money. AP2 retainers won't save you from everything.

Ap2 retainers will surely save you.

They raise the retainer split RPM (9700) over the valve contact RPM (10700)

The engine will be able to withstand a higher money shift.

Hit 10k in a stock AP1, split the retainers.

hit 10k in an AP1 with AP2 retainers, you will not split the retainers.
