Naturally-aspirated, Street Tire S2000 Throws Down at Super Lap Battle

By -

Swinging his S2000 hard and fast through the turns of Buttonwillow, YouTuber takes a spot in the top 10 in his class.

Every November since 2004 at Bakersfield, California’s Buttonwillow Raceway Park, hundreds of drivers gather to set the best laps in their classes during the Global Time Attack Super Lap Battle. No matter which set of wheels move through Bakersfield’s 13-turn configuration, no matter how much was changed from the base vehicle, the only thing that matters is taking the win with the quickest lap.

Sometimes, though, it’s good just to set a personal best. Such is the case with YouTuber and professional driver Jackie Ding. Equipped with a thoroughly-revised aero package, his 2007 S2000 was ready to deliver the desired results with only an extra 20 horses from the 2.2-liter inline-four via a custom tune.

“My first time at Buttonwillow, let’s see what we can do,” says Ding as he crosses through the dust of another time attacker to the start-finish line. His S2000 is already going hard when he hits the first turn, proclaiming he “can probably hold 4th here but… I’m scared ha.”

Ding’s S2000’s tires squeal through the turns, each corner taken at 9/10ths. He plans to carry the momentum through the turns, a plan that nearly bites him when he goes off the track for a few seconds. Ding doesn’t lift, though, and he’s soon back on it.

“Just Sunset to go…,” Ding tells us a few seconds after blowing by another dust cloud. The sun was far from setting, though, its bright light reflected off the turn as he rolled through into the straight.

Ding crosses the line with a time of 1:54.645, a time he’s very happy with. But the celebration is short-lived when, upon completing his next lap, he completely loses it on the final turn, spinning his S2000 through the dirt and back on the track facing potential traffic. A quick J-turn rights the course, and he’s on his way to taking eighth in the Street RWD class.
