Rumors of my demise have been greatly exaggerated.

Hey guys, I just looked back to see when my last post was and I couldn't believe it, but it was way back in February! I'm sorry that I haven't at least stopped by to say Hi.

I had a pretty major event happen yesterday. I quit my job at Nucor. A LONG time in the making, I finally said enough is enough and went ahead and did it. I've got some things to work out with HR still, but when I turned in my two week notice they told that it was company policy that after the notice was given that I was done and I was then escorted to the gate by security. I've been doing a lot of soul searching over the last few years about this, and I finally HAD to do it.

I worked out there for 7 long years. It was the best paying job that I have ever had or will probably ever have. But with that came alot of Bullshit that I could no longer take. I had planned to quit last August, but at the end of June the economy started its downward spiral and with things getting bad I chickened out of quitting hoping that I could hang out there until things improved. Now if I had worked anywhere else I could have been looking at a lay off, but because of Nucor pay structure they don't do that. If there is no steel being made then I don't get a production bonus and I only make about a third of my usual income. So I spent from july 08 until may 09 getting behind on bills and eating bread and water trying to keep from losing my house and cars etc. They had reduced us to two crews when things got slow, And when it picked up they were not willing to put another crew back on. I have had my work schedule changed at least 10 times this year and for the last month I had been pretty much working every day and not knowing when or if I would get a day off. I finally had to say enough is enough.

It was very tough for me to make this decision, but I have never been happy out there doing that kind of work. I'm going to take part of my profit sharing/401k out to live off of for a while, and try to finish school. I'm looking to finish my degree in graphic design. When I quit school I was 22 years old and in a bad financial situation. I found out that my friends at school who were graduating and getting entry level jobs were making less money than I was making already. So, I decided it wasn't worth it and quit school (really stupid looking back).

I had some ideas of starting a business last year, you guys know about the powdercoating. I might still try to do that out of my garage to make some extra money while I'm in school....I have to look closer at the finances 1st. I'm also going to try to start doing freelance design/illustration. I have been reading and studying on the web about design for probably about 6 months now. Re-learning all the software, and most importantly I have been drawing again. When I quit school I stopped drawing..... I did not draw anything for 12 years! 6 months ago I was cleaning up in the attic and came across my portfolio. I got it out and started looking through and I guess that's what got me back into it.

Anyway, that is where I am right now. I still have my S. And it looks like I'll be keeping it. Stacey and I are going to have to sit down and figure out what to do about a daily driver for me, because the pathfinder has just about had it. It is going to need some (more) money thrown at it if we are going to keep driving it.

Oh and just one more thing....

Sorry to hear about the job. You're a good, honest, responsible guy and you deserve better!

:hello: good to hear Andy. I used to be able to draw & paint have basically all but lost the ability :( - I too quit school back in 1995 for the same reasons - I was tired of living @ home 1st of all & tired of being poor 2nd.

My parents dug up my portfolio that spanned about 9 years just a few month ago which I summarily tossed in the trash. :ignore:

Hope things keep you & your family smiling.

Good to hear from you Andy. I haven't heard any rumors but it was nice for you to come and tell everyone. I feel for you on the job thing. When I turned in my 2 week notice at Daikin they escorted me out as well. I didn't even get to clean out my desk. So much for being a company man.

I hope you find something quickly. I think there is a job fair coming up some time here in Huntsville. I thought I heard about it on the radio this morning.

If there is anything you need just ask

I dont know you, but good luck with the job hunt!

ANDY! Good to hear from you. Sounds like you've been wrestling with a lot of big/tough decisions. Being stuck in a job you hate is hardly worth it even when the money's good. I hope everything works for the best in your new path. Probably the best part about graphic design in the South is that it's about the only profession that doesn't require you to have any idea about what you're doing at all.
Good luck man!

Good to hear from you man  Good luck going back to school
