Just a quick shout out and thanks to everyone on this, I ended up putting on the Amis Car Garage one with a new spring, new foam (new stupid cup holder latch) and almost a tube of the grease and it's quite smooth. I was going to also replace the 'change lever ball' but after breaking two of the small pivot caps earlier, I couldn't be sure how old the replacement plastic part was (although brand new) so I just left it in there. The shifting feels good, an interesting upgrade although I'm not sure how much of an improvement (if any) it has over the nylon cap.
Overall though I'm pleased with the upgrade. It gave me a chance to fix a couple items along the way, and for what was to be a $40 job (grease, pivot cap and cup holder latch) and 20 minutes turned out to be $300 ($450 if you count the new CDI torque wrench I bought for this) as I had to replace not one, but two center console switches, driving the wrong screw into the back and right through the plastic. But I "saved" money by not taking it to the mechanic to do it...or some strange car enthusiast math like that...
