Default Speakers need replacing

So I made a really wise decision a little while ago and let Audio Express install my head unit, and now my speakers have been blown. I guess I could take it back to them and complain until they replace the mess they made, but I want to avoid it all together, and perhaps just try to do it myself, with a little bit of help maybe.

I've done a bit of searching, and my initial impression is that the basket needs a little bit of modifying? How difficult is that to accomplish? What speakers should I invest in? I don't have too much money to throw around currently, but if I'm replacing them, I want it to sound decent. Any thoughts? Suggestions? Should I have searched harder?

Kerry can you impart some of your knowledge on speaker choices that require little to no modification.

There are a lot of speaker sets that will drop in to the stock locations. I don't remember if the '01 has the upper tweeter in the door, if I remember right, that didn't start until '02. If you don't have separates, you can go with two-ways like the polks:

those are good value for the sound quality.

If you do have a separate tweeter, you can go with something like these:

The install itself is pretty easy, I did mine in a day, plus another day to go back and add sound deadening material to the door.

Thanks man, appreciate the help. I'll attempt this myself then.

I bought a set of 6.5 Kickers from Fry's electronics a few years back when I first got the car. They only mount with one screw because they don't fit very well, even though it's what the guy at the store recommended for the car. Obviously they aren't S2000 experts, and it was long before I got onto S2ki, ultimately my bad. When I installed them, decided I'd see how they sounded and if it would distort the music at all, in which case, I would return them. Never had a problem though. Iv actually had a couple people mention being impressed with the sound, granted they don't fit perfectly.. I'm not really sure if I have a point to all that or not, but that was my personal experience with upgrading door speakers haha

They don't really install it for $1, they just cover the "install" cost by over-charging you for the hardware.

Since my AP1 didn't have door tweeters I ended up going with the ones in the first link Mini-F1 posted. They're coming in tomorrow, and I'm hoping to have them done before next Friday.

Kenwood makes great factory-fitting speakers with built-in tweeters. Zero modification and usually run between $150-200

The AP1.5 door panels are pretty cheap and you can always upgrade to them at a later date. I think the only thing you would be missing would be the wiring for the tweeters, but I'm assuming that can be added.
