Default Seeking unmodified 2004-2007 NFR S2000 with less than 25,000 miles to buy

Hey guys and gals, I'm in Austin, Texas. I thought I would write here to enlist the help of fellow S2000 enthusiasts who know S2000s and their owners the best.

Must be in excellent condition. And I am willing to travel out of state to get it, if necessary. I continue to monitor AutoTrader, various Craigslist sites, the s2ki Marketplace forum, and a few other 'cars for sale' websites for listings. My preference is a 2004 or 2005 model year and one-owner car but I be would happier than a kid in a candy shop if it was an S2000 in any year between 2004 and 2007, unmodified, NFR, and with less than 25,000 miles even with more than one owner.

If you know anyone who has one for sale that meets my criteria, be it a private seller or dealership, please PM me. I would be grateful. Thank you for your time!

John

There are differences between the 2004-2005 and 2006+ cars you should be aware of. You can't "tune" the earlier cars without an aftermarket ECU and they lack traction and stability control. Literally any performance mods will require a tuneable ECU.

Hope you have lots of time. Your insistence on a single, low volume color, and unrealistic mileage (especially for a '04 or '05) will severely limit your choices. I put color last on my list meaning I'd take any color that met the main criteria of unmodified 2006 or later and under 40,000 miles (a more realistic mileage than 25K). AutoTrader is your friend in this type quest.

Hi Chuck,

Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts. I appreciate your points. Yes, I am aware of the differences between the different years. I don't intend to modify the car and I don't really want to have TC, stability control, and drive-by-wire. But I believe my chances of finding a low mileage NFR are higher with 2006 and 2007 model years so if it has those features, I can live with it.

Done your homework I see.

I never intended to modify my '06 S2000 but yielded to temptation at least a bit. Don't worry all the removed parts are in my shed. Getting her tuned via Hondata FlashPro has greatly increased my enjoyment of the car due to significantly improved mid range power with a lowered VTEC. Only available in the 2006 and later cars. Remember you can turn VSA/traction control off so there are no liabilities.

Color choices are tough. The time we could order the color we want from a dealer are 10-years long gone. We're left with the survivors (and guys wreck these daily). There were only about 4000 NFR AP2 cars imported to North America. Maybe 2200 in '04 and '05. So you're looking for one of 2200 and very low miles. Pretty small window. Mine is silver (of course), the most common color. But only one of 272 with an all black interior imported in 2006. I knew I'd probably have to take whatever color there was to get my condition standards. Doubling your search to include 2006 and later will improve your odds of finding NFR.

You, again, make some great points, Chuck. Due to some recent life events, I've actually missed out on some great candidates that fit the bill, so I am actually hopeful that I will find one eventually. But I also realize that fewer convertibles are put up for sale during winter so I may have to wait a bit.

That's a great chart. Thanks for pointing me to it.

We're due for more "lake effect snow" today so my car looks like my "winter avatar" (on the left). I suspect you'll find more cars available in your area this time of year than mine. But the weather here on the North Coast at least keeps the mileage on mine down.

AutoTrader is how I found my can in the early summer of 2014. "High season" for sports cars. Large Honda dealer in Columbus (OH) -- 2 hours away -- had her on the used car showroom floor. Completely serviced, detailed, etc. Not quite stock (had aftermarket wheels) but otherwise met all other criteria. The other S2000's I'd checked on were either too rough, high mileage, or sold before I got there. Did some price dickering but I wasn't going to let it get away for a thousand bucks or so. Took me a month to get OEM wheels and new Bridgestone RE-11A tires.

Since we can't order these I recommend anyone doing a car search make a priority list. You may not get everything so the important stuff goes on top. Stuff that's less important goes lower. As noted, color wasn't really on my list (except maybe NOT yellow!). The priority list will immediately weed out cars. If your #1 is red you're down to less than 4000 cars sold across the US over 10 years ago. For me condition is more important than color. Folks are amazed this is a 10 year old car.

This thread can be closed. The search for an NFR S2000 is over! I am now the proud owner of a baby 2007 NFR Honda S2000.

Thanks to all who helped me along this journey.
