Default Difficulty shifting into first gear.

My 2001 has done 19k now and I noticed difficulty getting into first gear, worse in cold. Has anyone else had similar problem? Is it a sign of mechanical failure or gearbox oil due for a change?

What is the general consensus on gearbox oil and diff oil selection? How much do we need for each?

hlau, if you have a 2001 model it's probable that you have the older version clutch. As you've only done 19K you may not have yet noticed the vibration on deceleration (buzzing clutch syndrome).

I suggest that at your 20K service you ask for the clutch to be replaced with the new version (stronger springs). You'll find that the difficult first gear problem will disappear when you get the new clutch in.

I have the same problem with my ITR when the car is cold, but once it warms up it is OK

hlau,

If the difficulty getting into 1st goes away with the engine switched off the problem is clutch drag. This can be caused by a warped pressure/drive plate, breakup of the friction material, broken diaphragm spring, or hydralic problems.

Does your clutch release/bite near the floor, if so it could be hydraulics. (bleed clutch).

Work out any patterns in the problem then see your dealer armed with the TSM clutch replacement info.

Good luck

Speedracer.

Thanks everyone for the info!! I do have to clutch buzz problem but I've been putting up with it. (Did not want any honda mechanic to touch it unless I really have to).

Chris_barry, the bite is not close to the floor and there is no problem when the engine is off. So sounds like the clutch is dying.

Sounds like first thing to do is to get the clutch fixed...

Hlau,

If the clutch pickup is near the top of the travel its not a hydraulic problem.

I would get the clutch TSB done. You may want to put in a new pressure plate while its all apart. You should be able to negotiate with the honda dealer so you pay for the cover plate and the rest is covered by the warranty.

The reason I suggest doing the cover plate is I've had troubles myself with symptoms like yours that were caused by a dodgy diaphragm spring in the cover plate. When the clutch was depressed the friction part of the driven plate pulled back lop sided. While the whole lot is apart you might as well change it. It will cost lots $$ more if you have to do it later, and being a part normally excluded from the warranty you will have to cough up the lot.

Good luck

Chris.

Thanks Chris. I'll speak to the dealer and see what can be done.

INterestingly, the gearbox seems much smoother and easier to engage in all gears, and the first gear problem went completely today. (hot weather) I wonder whether the problem is temperature related as well.
