Kids at Sea
Did you ever buy one of those "Kids at Sea" raffle tickets?
If so, I've got bad news for you. The promoter was arrested by Victoria Police fraud squad on Thursday and charged with running 28 bogus raffles over the last 6 years.
Lawrence Shannon of Stinsons Rd Park Orchards was released on $100,000 bail and a condition that he have no involvement in future raffles. His brother-in-law Bill Horizidis of Lower Templestowe was also charged with 11 similar offences.
The police allege that all the prizes in all the raffles were won by either Shannon or Horizidis and the approx $8M netted was used to finance a fleet of yachts owned by Shannon. The fleet was declared to be a "Charity" because Shannon sometimes allowed underpriveleged kids to act as crew (at no salary of course). No doubt the tax department will be interested in this charitable activity too?
The "prize" on offer was usually a 911 Porsche and they sold about 1600 tickets at $300 each in each raffle. Sometimes a more exotic vehicle was announced as the prize and tickets were anywhere between $500 & $1000.
I was on their mailing list and regularly received their brochures. I did buy one of their tickets (in 1998 or 1999 - not sure) and actually went to watch the Drawing as it was held across the road from where I was working at the time. They actually bought a new Porsche up across the footpath and into the building area. A few men in suits rotated a barrell, one pulled something out and another appeared to write something down. It was all over in 5 minutes and the Porsche drove away,

Dan, I read that in The Age too. Bloody annoying - does he have anything to do with Shannons the car wholesalers/auctioneers?
Must be especially annoying for you Dan as you have invested in this scam.
