Default Sell S2000?

My S2000 is getting on a bit at around 160,000km and although it's been trouble-free its entire life, I feel like it's time for change for something less frantic and more civilised. It's still very tight but I feel like it's going to be tougher to sell later on as it piles on the kms.

I've been toying with the idea of an 02 E46 M3 which can be had for around $55k these days with around 80,000-120,000 km. Problem is the maintenance costs and the possibility of major repair bills. I do around 70-100km daily so it's not going to be a garage queen.

The other option is a VW Golf VI GTI brand new. Either manual or with the DSG box. Wife reckons it will be a downgrade and I won't be happy with it, but my viewpoints and priorities have changed. I kinda like it and it will be practical and will serve me well for the next few years at least.

I like the R36 wagon, but then we've already got the Volvo so don't need two wagons. Final option is to keep the S2000 for another year or so.

I'm not rich, my wife isn't working looking after our newborn and I have a mortgage and bills like every other man but if we all thought with our heads and not our hearts every now and then we'd all be driving Camrys with the life sucked out of our eyes. Opinions people?

its a really hard decision ....

i total regret selling our S2000

6 months on and i still think about it and all the good times i had it in .

You might want to do your research on the E46 BMW's . They have major issues . There is a subframe quality issue on some E46's that cost upto $8-10k to fix and the SMG's on the M3's have issues as well . Plus servicing is around $1500 mark , however these are in intervals of about 25,000kms.

The Golf GTI is a great car, i think the MK V is a really good buy , yes it is in some ways a downgrade, but it does offer alot of driving satisfaction .

what are you looking for in a replacement car ? just an A to B car ? or you want something with abit of go as well ?

Your car is already in the high mileage catgeory. I think to any prospective buyer, 160000-199999 is no different. Once you cross into the 200000 bracket you have crossed another psychological barrier that may make it harder to sell.

I think the M3 will be very expensive to maintain.

If your priorities really have changed, the Golf could be a good choice.

Like Joefish says, to me 160 k kms is already a tough sell. Either sell it now, and get the Golf and realise the benefits of a new, quick and boring car to drive, or keep the S for awhile longer.

Keep it, find another way to get around for a month or 2, you'll come back glad that you didn't sell it. Just my 2 cents but this what I've experienced. I think its a phase we go through esp that I have a 3yr old daughter as well. But I just picked up a DD 4wd to stimulate my other interest, off-road.

I had a Golf between my00 and present 06 although not a GTi ...... boring!

Yeah the sensible side in me is leaning towards the Golf and it will be the Mark VI, not the V. But M power is tempting...

True on the high mileage where another 20-30,000km won't make much difference though.

Im in the same position, whether to sell or keep mines under 80k km's for a 01 which is not bad, ive spend a fair abit doing it up and now going back to stock because maybe to sell, i want something cheaper but not happy with whats around now im in two minds of keeping it.. ive looked after it and ive just changed the radiator, ive spent heaps on it maintenance wise aswel... so not sure if I want to give my hard work for someone else to enjoy!

Depending on price and specs, you may also want to wait and see what the FT86 is like - with the EJ20T it's shaping up to be a good package.

Keep the S, turbo or supercharge it. Buy yourself a comfortable commuter for the weekdays and have a hell of a ride on the weekends!
