Default Stock Exhaust - how many dB?

hey,

Just wondering if anyone knows how many dB the stock s2k exhaust is? the limit is 90dB in victoria. got a letter in the post so i guess i have to have it checked anyway. I'd imagine that its somewhere in the high 80's anyway?

Yeah!

Do you have your airbox cover off?
Pod filters can add up to 12db at the exhaust end...

Good question! I've searched in all the usual places and haven't been able to find any solid information.

I would have guessed that it's well below the 90db limit as, from the outside, it seems to make less noise than many other cars. That is, it has a good muffler system.

If you look at the Exhaust Comparison video from here: http://s2000library.com/ (35MB). It's supposed to be pretty near 99dB!

I want to know how this came about. Are we to believe that some cop or EPA official saw you pass by sedately and took down your number. Or was there more to the story?

I've had an S for 6 and a half years. It's had the stock exhaust and three others, two of which were and are belligerent singles that look like cannons. But no one has hassled me about noise.

I'm guessing there was some unnecessary revving in a known cruising location?

That kind of sucks. These laws come about because people abuse others rights. But at least in most jurisdictions discretion is used with regard to their application.

I have a very modified car but I behave myself and no one bothers me. I've been breath tested a few times and not a word said about the bonnet or exhaust.

But make an arse of yourself in a loud Civic with neons on a Friday night in George St and they'll be all over you. Personally I think that's the way it should be.
