no the EPA is weird in melbourne, my friend got sent a similar letter one day in the mail...we still dont know how someone knew to send it to him.
The relevant legislation says "A member of the public can report a noisy vehicle to the Traffic Management Unit at their local police station. If a police officer assesses the vehicle as being too noisy, the vehicle will be referred to EPA for noise testing.".

So, this suggests that your vehicle has been spotted/heard by an off-duty police officer OR a private citizen has called a friendly policeperson who has referred you to the EPA without inspecting your car him/herself. Alternatively, you've had a personal meeting with the constabulory that you forgot to mention.

japcab, the ESPM Data Manual specifies that an S2000 must be tested at 6225rpm. You can check everything you need to know here ....

Now, the only missing piece of information is - What exactly is the db rating of the stock exhaust?

I think this is what happened to my friend, there's practically no one with "loud" cars where we live! haha

I want to know how this came about. Are we to believe that some cop or EPA official saw you pass by sedately and took down your number. Or was there more to the story?

I've had an S for 6 and a half years. It's had the stock exhaust and three others, two of which were and are belligerent singles that look like cannons. But no one has hassled me about noise.

I'm guessing there was some unnecessary revving in a known cruising location?

Japcab ....
if your car is stock , i dont think you got to much to worry about . They cant defect you for having a fully stock car . Just may need to get that certified by honda perhaps ?

mind you , when i was changing over my wheels a few weeks back , the factory muffler is a big ass unit

vuey, the reason why the stock muffler is "a big ass unit" is because it was carefully designed by the Honda engineers to provide the required noise reduction with the MINIMUM possible flow restrictions.

If you install a smaller muffler the most probable outcome will be either ....

1) Satisfactory noise reduction but with severe flow restrictions and subsequent drop in power.

2) Small flow restrictions and sufficient noise to attract every policeman within 5Kms.

very good points made Redrover

ive seen some aftermarket ones that dont even come close to it in terms of size. Hence those who have tried in vain in search of more power to swap to an aftermarket muffler with no real gains in power over the stock set up . Those dudes in Honda R&D arent mucking around thats for sure

didnt realize it did that . I've had incidents when ive had to convince my mates that it is a stock muffler .

DB reading 91.4

Microphone was 50cm from tip at a 45 degree angle
Engine run to 75% of max RPM (6,250)
Sound level is also measured as throttle is released from 75%

Sourced from BMI exhaust catalogue. Now im not saying this is scientific or official info,i just thought it might be a good guide line.
