Tapping Valve
The last week or so I seem to be hearing what I would describe as a soft tapping sound coming from the engine. I don't recall hearing this sound before. Could it be a tapping valve?
- Can hear it clearly on idle.
- Can sometimes hear it on decel.
- Can't hearing when cruising.
Any ideas?

Perhaps try opening the engine bay cover (Do Smarts have a bonnet?) whilst the engine is idling and look for simple things like a piece of metal caught on the fan belt or a loose nut somewhere (NO! - Not the driver )

noisy injectors?
I find the s2k has a noisy ass valvetrain. I've checked the retainers and they are all fine, had all the valve clearances set etc. Maybe when the car is brand spanking new its all quiet and smooth but once you get some significant km's on the engine it gets noisier.

I am on my 2nd timing chain tensioner after replacing it 6,000kms ago
My car used to have a very loud tapping noise coming from the engine, i got the tappet adjustment done and it quietened down slightly, once i did the timing chain tensioner engine was completely quiet like when it first came out of the showroom.

You can get automotive stethescopes which are like those things doctors keep in the freezer before they listen to your chest.
The automotive ones have a long probe that you can put against the engine. The close you are to the noise the louder it becomes.
If you dont have one of these get the biggest screwdriver you have and hold the handle against your ear and blade against the engine.
Chris.

The s2000 valve train is normally not meant to be very noisy, if it is noisy you need to check the valve clearances, if they are all within specification and there is still a loud tapping noise you need to check the timing chain tensioner.
