Sydney metro is quite big. It takes over an hour to traverse it when there is no traffic.
How long are you staying?
Will you buy or rent?
How big a place do you need?
How much do you want to spend in rent/mortgage?
What kind of areas do you prefer (family orientated/trendy/close to nightlife/cheap and nasty)?
Do you want to drive to work or take public transport?
Check out www.domain.com.au and www.realestate.com.au. If you find something that looks promising check out its location in www.whereis.com.au (select New South Wales as the state) and use the "get directions" feature to get an "optimistic" estimate of driving times to work (you need to know your office's address or the suburb at the very least). Also check http://www.cityrail.info/timetable/index.jsp to get an idea of where the train stations are and use it with www.whereis.com.au to figure which burbs are close to the rail line.
