Default What Oil

Hi,

I know that there are many threads on this (including some in this section of the forum) but I cant seem to find any that are recent and not about American brands. So basically I am looking to see what engine oils people are using and if there are any in particular that have stood out as a good product for the Australian S2000 owner.

Personally I have been through a number of different oils and have not found one I liked. Currently I am running a Caltex Havoline 5W 40 synthetic which I do not find that great. I have looked at using the redline products the Americans like but at $120 per quart from the Aus distributor (where as is is sold for $40 something in the US) I dont think its worth it and I cant be bothered importing oil for my car.

I have also run a Shell Helix 5W 40 and thought it ran quite fine but had poor oil consumption with it.

I use Valvoline Synpower 5w40. I noticed a drop in oil consumption after switching to this from the Honda FEO 10w30.

I know what you meen. This is one of the reasons I started this thread, you read the US threads and you think that its 10W-30 or nothing but I dont seem to be able to find many 10W-30 oils for sale... let alone mineral oils as is I believe recomended by honda.

Meanwhile my mechanic over here thinks that is way to thin for my car and we have experimented with a variety of different thickness. I didnt like running thicker oils so i am back at 5W-40 now (which is the recomended oil viscosity by many manufacturers btw).

You should read this thread.

http://www.ozhonda.com/forum/showthr...-for-the-S2000

But ultimately, 0,5,10,15,20... is your cold start up viscosities... the later is when engine is warm. I'm using Castrol Edge 10w40. 10 because its not that cold in Australia.. 40 because it's thick enough for my 60,000km engine...

The recommended oil viscosity for the F20C is 10w-30. However, depending on engine wear/age and usage, you may decide to choose a different viscosity. I've always used 10w-30, or thereabouts.

5w-30 fully synth Nulon

On the weight question see below too from emails from Nulon

Question:
Please can you advise why you list 10w40 for pre 2006 Honda s2000s and 5w30 as the recommendation for 06 onwards (Australia)
Manufacturer spec oil which is semi synth is a 10w30.

Hi Tze,

Thank you for your enquiry regarding Nulon engine oils.

Oil viscosity ratings contain two components. The number that proceeds the W is the winter viscosity rating of the oil (a measure of its viscosity at extremely low temperatures) and the number following the W is the viscosity rating of the oil at operating temperature (around 100oC). As engines wear it is best practice to increase the operating temperature viscosity by one grade. Nulon adjust our recommendations once the vehicle is five years old, we assume in this time it has travelled around 100,000km. This is the reason why we have specified a 10W40 now that the vehicle is over five years old. With the climate in Australia if you continue to use a 10W30 oil when the vehicle has travelled over 100,000km you may experience oil consumption issues.

If you are experiencing no oil consumption issues you could continue to use a 10W30 oil after 100,000km. It will give slightly better fuel economy (as little as 1%) than using the higher viscosity 10W40. If you do burn some oil the recommendation would be to use a 10W40 grade oil.

The choice of 5W or 10W is not as important unless you experience extended sub zero temperatures during winter. A 5W oil is thinner than a 10W oil under cold start conditions and will flow to vital engine parts quicker when starting the engine cold. If you do not experience extended cold climate a 10W oil will give adequate protection.

To answer your question, it is safe to use a 5W30 oil in the 2004 Honda S2000. This 30 grade oil will give optimum fuel economy.

If you have an oil consumption issue or use the car under extreme conditions (race etc) it would be best to move to a 40 grade oil.

The choice is up to you. The Nulon oils suited to your vehicle are shown below.

HONDA
S2000, 2.0 Litre DOHC VTEC Eng., Manual (1999-2006)
