Underbelly? Single shootings? Multiply these by about 20 and you start to get the point. Ive been in neighborhoods in LA where people have hurled abuse and rocks the car I was in because they knew we were white, and this has been with a patrol car following us. Get real mate.
Just so you understand what a truly dangerous neighborhood is in a first world country (because I wont even start on some parts of South Africa I have traveled through) Tell me an area in Australia where you would have a 25% chance of being a victim of a violent crime? or 10% for that matter?

It's not all about having guns for the sake of having guns, although I concede many people probably do own for this reason, or some constitutional right crap, but I know many people who carry a weapon hoping never to use it, they wish they didn't have to, but unfortunately find themselves in a situation where they either work or go through very high crime rate areas.
Springvale, Sunshine, Frankston in Victoria are bad only given that in Australia you have more chance being killed by the local fauna than a local.
