Default Yet more fixed speed cams on the way for Qld

FIXED speed cameras will be installed on Queensland's "problem" roads early in the new year.

Transport Minister Steve Bredhauer last night announced he had ordered a trial of the hi-tech digital cameras because of their success helping reduce road deaths interstate and overseas.

In a speech to State Parliament, Mr Bredhauer did not reveal where the fixed cameras would be located but he had previously identified the Pacific Motorway between Brisbane and the Gold Coast as an appropriate location.

I love this qote:
"If you have a fixed speed camera you need a structure on the side of the road so I don't think we'd be able to keep their locations a secret," Mr Bredhauer said.

Of course you'd WANT to keep the cameras secret so that people would CONTIUNE speeding along there and not the "STUPID" option of slowing people down with signs huh?

Many times I have seen speed cams on a perfectly straight stretch of a 4 lane motorway. I like to know how these straight stretches are deemed to be 'accident blackspots'. Traditionally accident blackspots are found on narrow windy country roads, certain intersections and so forth. In fact I don't see how a 'black spot' could exist on the motorway between Brisbane and the Gold Coast.

Sh!t I thought we would be spared from fixed speed cameras in QLD.

I have several car enthusiast aquaintances who also happen to be gun enthusiasts. They have vowed to start snipering speed cameras if they are ever introduced.

Personally I would just drive up to it with a big arse angle grinder hooked up to a generator.

There's a road near my house which is wide enough for 2 lanes, but is only a one lane road. It's an industrial area, straight, with clearly visible intersections.

They put a camera there, and I thought "This has to be a revenue raiser. No way could there ever be an accident there. " (and I have never seen one there). The reason people speed along there, is because it's so safe to.

Three months after it was installed, they hailed it a great success, claiming it reduced accidents there by 90% Not sure how they came to this number, but they claimed in 3 months, only 300 fines were handed out. (that's 3 per day, people)
