Default 2016 24 Heures du Mans - 18-19 June - Ford Returns

The 24 Hours of Le Mans (French: 24 Heures du Mans) is the world's oldest active sports car race in endurance racing, held annually since 1923 near the town of Le Mans, France. It is one of the most prestigious automobile races in the world and is often called the "Grand Prix of Endurance and Efficiency". The event represents one leg of the Triple Crown of Motorsport; other events being the Indianapolis 500, and the Monaco Grand Prix.

The race is organized by the Automobile Club de l'Ouest (ACO) and runs on the Circuit de la Sarthe, which contains a mix of closed public roads and a specialist racing circuit, in which racing teams have to balance speed with the cars' ability to race for 24 hours without sustaining mechanical damage.

Circuit de la Sarthe

Length: 13.629 km (8.469 mi)
Turns: 38
Lap record: 3:17.475 (André Lotterer, Audi Sport Team Joest, 2015, LMP1)

Car/Class Information and Identifiers

The 24h Le Mans is a combination of entries from 4 different series: World Endurance Championship / European Le Mans Series / Asian Le Mans Series / IMSA Weathertech Championship

Each series race under the same specification and regulation that will be used at Le Mans, with the exception being IMSA's Prototype and GT Daytona classes. An entrant from IMSA's prototype class would have to modify their current LMP2 car used in IMSA or buy/borrow one to spec. The same would be said for any entrants coming from IMSA's GTD class (would have to use a GTE spec car).

For the WEC, Le Mans is treated as any other on the calender.. The whole field is given automatic entry. For the other 3 series, invitations are typically given to class championship winners in their respective series as well as previous Le Mans class winners. Special circumstances happen such as Ford having a brand new car and coming with 2 extra entries from IMSA (to make 4 total).

LMP1 - Red number plates - Hybrid LeMans Prototypes with Energy Recovery Systems from major manufacturers. Also includes Privateer LMP1 cars without hybrid power.

LMP2 - Blue number plates - Higher minimum weight than LMP1, engine size limited.

LMGTE-Pro - Green number plates - High end GT race cars built to specification. Includes Ferrari's 488 GTE, C7R Corvette, Porsche's 911 RSR, Aston Martin's Vantage GTE and the all new Ford GT.

LMGTE-AM - Orange number plates - Same as above with the exception that a bronze rated driver must be used. While Pro cars can be brand new, AM class cars must be atleast one year old.

TV Schedule/Audio

Fox Sports

June 18 – 24 Hours of Le Mans (all times ET and subject to change):
FS1 8:30 AM to 2:00 PM
FS2 2:00 PM to 4:30 PM
FS2 6:00 PM to 6:30 PM

FS2 10:30 PM to 5:30 AM (June 19)
FS1 5:30 AM to 9:30 AM (June 19)

*The entire race is streamed live on FOX Sports GO

WEC/24h Le Mans app available in the app store. Live streaming of race on pc or mobile device (costs $ but very good compared to tv with commercials and swapping channels). Throughout the season the app is FIA WEC but changes to 24h Le Mans for the race weekend. If you need assistance signing up feel free to PM.

http://www.radiolemans.com If you're unfamiliar, RLM do the official commentary for the full FIA WEC season as well as the IMSA Weathertech streaming service. However, FIA/ACO bring in a different team of announcers for the 24h of Le Mans. RLM still do their stand alone commentary so typically I will fire up the video stream, muted, and play RLM audio as they (John Hindhaugh and team) are second to none.

This weekend is the Le Mans test. Sunday allows the teams to get on track.

From 24h-lemans.com

Competitors can take part in an official test day two weeks before the race to get their bearings on the track. Entry is free to spectators who have tickets to the actual race. For some drivers, participation in the test day is not mandatory, for others it is imperative. Drivers who are competing in their first Le Mans 24 Hours are required to complete a minimum of 10 laps during the Test Day and undergo simulator training.
The Test Day comprises two 4-hour sessions. The sessions are timed, but admission to the race is not affected. Other than rookies, new cars (at least one car per model) and new competitors, i.e. members of teams who have never yet taken part, must also complete the Test Day. The day provides an opportunity to gauge the competition, although many keep a few tricks up their sleeves.
The Radio Le Mans team should be on ground following and streaming live audio of the test sessions.

So the #2 GT 40 driven by Bruce McLaren and Chris Amon to victory at Le Mans in 1966 was at Lime Rock Park yesterday. The car went through an 18 month restoration and was shaken down yesterday in preparation for its trip to Le Mans for the 24 Hours.

Note the Kiwi sliver fern. Both drivers were from NZL. Also Bruce McLaren Motor Racing Team sticker on window

Here is video of the car firing up and rolling out to go on track

EDIT: here is a pic from the podium in 1966

Bruce McLaren had long passed when I was born. Denny Hulme had retired the year prior. I came of age in the Schumacher era.

But as I developed an admiration for Bruce McLaren, a member on here gave me this patch:

^ Denny Hulme gave it to him when he volunteered to do timing and scoring for McLaren at a Can-AM race in Mt. Tremblant. I keep it in the hopes that I am someday going to go vintage racing and I shall wear it on my racing suit. Until then it occupies pride of my place in my small collection of car and racing memorabilia.

In my opinion, the Mclaren M20 was the most beautiful race car ever.

They called the McLarens (pre M20) the Bruce and Denny show. Then Penske's Panzers came along, first with Mark Donohue then George Follmer in the L&M Porsche 9017-10 then Donohue in the Sunoco Porsche 917-30, which effectively killed the series.

foxsports

FOX Sports opens its live coverage of the 84th running of the 24 Hours of Le Mans on Sat., June 18 (8:30 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. ET) on FS1 and FOX Sports GO, with Bob Varsha and Brian Till leading an eight-member FOX Sports broadcast team.

Varsha’s broadcast team for the iconic endurance race includes Calvin Fish and Tommy Kendall, while Till leads the team of Jamie Howe and Scott Pruett.

Justin Bell and Andrew Marriott report from the pits and legendary driver Sam Posey is writing and voicing the open, as well as providing pieces throughout the weekend.

“From my first Le Mans in the mid-1980s, the 24 Hours has been my favorite event in motor sports,” Varsha said. “Nine decades of spectacular history, drivers and teams from nearly 30 countries, extraordinary mechanical diversity on the grid, a quarter million spectators and the sheer audacity of racing state-of-the-art machinery on an eight-plus mile lap made up mainly of public roads is simply a fan’s dream.

“And with this year’s field expanded to 60 cars, there is so much more of everything. Don’t forget that Le Mans is a double-points event for full-season competitors in the World Endurance Championship, and from what we’ve seen in the first two WEC races at Silverstone and Spa, the race for overall honors is beyond predicting. In fact, an overall victory by a car other than the 1000-horsepower LMP-1 hybrids is not out of the question.

“Le Mans is often called ‘a British race on French soil’ due to the event’s huge popularity in the UK. But there is also a broad streak of American achievement at ‘Le Sarthe,’ from Luigi Chinetti to Carroll Shelby to Phil Hill to Dan Gurney and A.J. Foyt, to the merry band at Corvette Racing and their incredible success.

“American fans will have cars to cheer for from the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship, including Michael Shank Racing, Extreme Speed Motorsports, and Krohn Racing in LMP2.

“IMSA-based teams make up half the field in the ferocious GTE-Pro class, with Corvette Racing, Risi Competizione andFerrari, doing battle with factory teams from Porsche, Aston Martin, and no fewer than four new Ford GT’s from Chip Ganassi Racing in their quest to repeat Ford’s first victory in 1966.

“And GTE Am features nine Americans, including last year’s podium finishers Patrick Long, Townsend Bell, Bill Sweedler and Jeff Segal, plus former winner Johnny O’Connell.”

Author A.J. Baime, who wrote the best-selling Go Like Hell: Ford, Ferrari, and Their Battle for Speed and Glory at Le Mans, will participate in the broadcast to offer perspective on Ford’s 50-year anniversary of their stunning 1966 win at Le Mans.

FOX Sports GO and FOX Sports.com provide live streaming video from multiple in-car cameras.
