Ummm....there are four different engines being used in F1.
No, there is one engine manufactured by four different companies.

By "different engines" I mean v8's, straight 6's, flat ten's, whatever, all competing on the same track at the same time. That used to define the spirit of F-1. There were rulesets that coupled forced induction or minimum car weight to motor design and displacement. Inclusionary ideas, not rules to eliminate any possibility of innovation.

A good example is LeMans Prototypes. Teams have very real choices when deciding on a powerplant and chassis. And it makes for exciting racing year after year.
I fully agree with you that the situation is pretty sad. I've followed F1 since the 70's, when it was close to "anything goes".

From an engine standpoint I loved the early 80's. Either a 1.5L Turbo, or 3.0 non-turbo. Pretty much no other rules. As many engines as you wanted. 1350hp one lap wonder grenade engines. Then, as rules kicked in and computers designated the engines (correct my if I'm wrong), all the manufactures pretty much decided that 60degree V10's were the best package for size, shape, weight, output, etc.

In short, computers ruined a lot of the cool innovation where everybody tried something different. They also inadvertently increased costs exponentially. Not the computers themselves, but the fact that the computers got the designs to be so close to perfect that to gain any advantage you had to spend huge sums of money to make a better product. From engines, to suspension to aero to body shape to electronics etc.

I was always interested in F1 because it's the pinocle of technology, but if some sort of cost containment didn't happen, we'd end up with only 2 teams on the grid.

Now, conversely, it's interesting that money can't solve it all, because you had Toyota and Honda spending billions, but being nothing but back markers.

BTW, I had heard that back in the 80's, when Honda dominated the engine market by far, they were spending $500 million a year on their program. Back in the 80's!!! And only on engines!!

That's like saying that because Australia V8 Supercars all have the same "engine", it doesn't make for exciting racing. V8 Supercars has some of the most exciting top tier racing out there even though they all have 5.0l V8s w/ 2 valve per cylinder and 10:1 compression ratio engines made by only two manufacturers.

Those Aussie V8 Supercars are awesome! They make for great racing!

They are bouncing around all over the place! Is it the LACK of aero that makes watching them so cool?

They'll be such a contrast to F1 in Austin.

Thought they were a supporting event...but may be wrong.

Holy Crap, the OP tossed the towel in too early!

5th race of the season, 5th new driver and 5th new constructor to take the win

This season is turning out to be awesome

Op really dropped the ball...

Yes, I'm quite capable of reading, so yes, I'm very much aware of how old this thread is

I'm also aware that fish ought to be teased because his decision to throw in the towel could not have come at a worse time, and I continue to hope someday he will notice this thread, and see how long we have been teasing him
