S2000 JDM VGS Track Build
I have owned an s2000 now for just over a year. I got myself a daily and have been modifrying it with the intention of making it a Track day toy now for the best part of 6 months. It has been a slow build, trying not to get in any debt/loans while trying to save for a house. :argh:
My previous cars/builds have been Civic Type R - EP3, EK9 B18C, Mitsubishi Evo V GSR and now my s2000. You can follow me on IG @ jake_s2k i usually post some of my progress on there also. So, here we go. 2003 Honda s2000 JDM Import Type V (VGS) *Previously Owned by Spoon Sports APPARENTLY* 53k F/S/H Mods that came on the car: Spoon ECU Spoon Manifold De-Cat Spoon Panel Filter Spoon Front Strut Brace Cusco Lower Rear Strut Brace Modified OEM Exhaust Smoothed Bumpers Honda Access Dampers OK, so on with the build. After using it as my daily for work covering 140 miles A DAY i noticed things starting to wear and the car handling progressively getting worse. The underside hadn't been sealed. The bushes were worn. Suspension was knocking. Rear Diff mounts cracked, and so on! I stripped the underside bare, bought new control arms, subframes and a whole load of WaxOyl... the fun began. Strongflex 75a Track + Powerflex Compliance Bushes, all new Geo bolts, Upper Ball Joints, Track Rod ends & ARB Links. SPOON SPORTS SOLID STEERING RACK BUSHES & RIGID COLLAR KIT. GAVE THE STEERING RACK A LICK OF PAINT AS WELL. HARDRACE BUMPSTEER & DRIVESHAFT SPACERS HAD TO USE THE PILLAR DRILL ON THE BUMPSTEER SPACER HOLES SO THE SPOON SOLID BUSHES WOULD FIT INSIDE. AS YOU CAN SEE THEY DIDN'T FIT. IM GUESSING THE VGS IS DIFFERENT TO THE NORMAL RACK. ALL GOING BACK TOGETHER WITH SOME REAR DME ADJUSTABLE TOE ARMS & MEISTER ZETA R COILOVERS |
Track cars need aero right? Made myself a little front splitter and airdam jobbie (yet to test it out) and cut my rear bumper for hopefully a diffuser in the near future.

Decided as i was bleeding the brakes to do the clutch fluid as well. I should of checked this ages ago, it was filthy and so much sludge in the reservoir. :feint:
Decided to get a HEL Braided clutch line while i was at it. https://c5.staticflickr.com/8/7668/2...bd3fc8189c.jpg7986235 by Jake Baker, on Flickr https://c7.staticflickr.com/8/7676/2...9fea5ae179.jpg79285374598 by Jake Baker, on Flickr https://c5.staticflickr.com/8/7408/2...f2763a0825.jpgnew7893 by Jake Baker, on Flickr |

Keep up the good work....
|
Looks good so far! Never seen a flocked dash on an S2000 before.
|
Nice built !!
A little info ... The spoon solid steering rack bushing have a "niple" that is supposed to fit in the bolt hole in the frame. Just like the solid subframe bushings. I had the same problem with my steering rack spacers. My guess is the spoon steering rack spacer must have that little groove to fit with their solid steering rack bushings. Keep up the good work. It's always nice to read a good built thread |
Looks great so far. Kudos for putting in some real hard work !!
|
This a great project I'll be following!
|
Good work, I noticed that someone said the YellowStuff pads were a bad choice (in the original thread). I have to say that may be the case on standard calipers but on those 6 pots I think it will be less of an issue, as least I hope it is because I thought they gave a pretty good brake pedal.
|
Nice work eventually I will want to redo all my bushing as well, how do you like poly compared to rubber bushings?

I already had the Hardrace spacers so i just measured the "nipple" size and stuck it on a pillar drill and made the holes bigger.

New shoes came today :surprised:
Team Dynamic Pro Race 1.2 Motorsport Editions. Had them custom made for the s2000 so no spigot rings needed. 17x9 et40 square. Planning to run 255/40's all-round. https://c8.staticflickr.com/8/7348/2...28dab52a2b.jpgIMG_20160527_103242 by Jake Baker, on Flickr https://c5.staticflickr.com/8/7442/2...b80a7312_b.jpgIMG_20160527_103115 by Jake Baker, on Flickr |
Saw this when you had it in the UK forum. Awesome build man! Reminds me to stop being a lazy asshole and get to work on my own car.
|
Such a awesome build so far.

Little update.
Got my 255/40 Nankang ns2r MED Compound tyres fit to the Team Dynamics. Also ordered some Buddyclub p1 RCA's front & rear, which i have now stripped down the rear hubs and fit the rears. I am also replacing the rear wheel bearings while they are off and giving the hubs a lick of paint. After a lot of trial and error parts and researching as to fitting my KEY!S steering wheel onto the VGS upper column, i ended up replacing the upper column for a normal one. This ended up being ALOT cheaper than the option of a VGS boss kit (£350-600), i paid £25 for a second hand steering column and £40 for a HKB boss. https://c7.staticflickr.com/9/8607/2...8d64eb09_o.jpg2016-07-28_02-40-19 by Jake Baker, on Flickr https://c1.staticflickr.com/9/8779/2...40fdf8ea_o.jpg2016-07-28_02-42-18 by Jake Baker, on Flickr https://c3.staticflickr.com/9/8568/2...9bcce3e9_o.jpg2016-07-28_02-41-22 by Jake Baker, on Flickr |
Man this is awesome I love the flocked dash. Keep up the good work.

Got the front RCA's in yesterday. Rear hubs stripped down, a lick of paint, RCA's in and ordered some new wheel bearings while i was at it.
Also a sneaky peak of the wheels fitted  looks even better in person, cant wait till its all back together and set-up. https://c5.staticflickr.com/9/8644/2...eb349683_o.jpg2016-07-29_08-27-36 by Jake Baker, on Flickr https://c7.staticflickr.com/9/8269/2...a29fff33_o.jpg2016-07-29_08-28-13 by Jake Baker, on Flickr https://c7.staticflickr.com/9/8064/2...297257e4_o.jpg2016-07-29_08-29-02 by Jake Baker, on Flickr |
nice project!
what paint / coating do you use for the suspension? |
She's finally on the ground!!
With the new wheel bearings in and new hubs. Time to get the wheels on :surprised: I have been playing with the ride height and camber today just so i can move it about the drive and get it on the back of my mates tow truck. As you can see it's sitting very low in the pictures. BUT I LOVE IT. Also ordered myself my own wheel arch roller as i think im going to need to roll the arches more. https://c8.staticflickr.com/9/8123/2...55d2648c_o.jpgDSC_0592 by Jake Baker, on Flickr https://c5.staticflickr.com/9/8286/2...5c04223c_o.jpgIMG_20160818_132355 by Jake Baker, on Flickr https://c4.staticflickr.com/9/8299/2...83eb385e_o.jpgIMG-20160818-WA0005 by Jake Baker, on Flickr https://c1.staticflickr.com/9/8454/2...8f90556b_o.jpgIMG_20160818_170542 by Jake Baker, on Flickr https://c3.staticflickr.com/9/8142/2...1ef24116_o.jpgIMG_20160818_170527 by Jake Baker, on Flickr |

A bit of an update on this slow ass project :argh:
I have been doing some further weight reduction by removing the heating and re-routing the coolant pipes. I may in the future by a lightweight heater box and some ducting if the screen gets too misty. But for now i will just try the cheaper option of some Rainex! The AC box has also gone, all the heating ducting in the dash and the soft top and motors all out! My 'Custom Cages' Roll Cage has turned up after a good month of waiting! I also purchased a Sparco Circuit II Winged bucket seat and some Tegiwa low position seat rails, which i don't think are going to be any good and the seat sits far too high even on the lowest setting. With a cage and door bars it's going to be a very tight squeeze, i feel sorry for my cage builder  I think i am going to sell the adjustable low rails and get him to make me up a custom seat frame where i can just bolt on some fixed side mounts which should give me the option to lower the seats enough! I also need to get a short snap off boss kit as getting in and out of the car is already a pain and thats with no cage or dash in yet! So i will be ordering an NRG short snap off kit and selling my HKB. I am also picking up a Hardtop and some fixed brackets this weekend for a good price so once i have that i can pretty much give the car to my friend to start welding in the cage. Fingers crossed not much more is needed before i can have a little fun and maybe a cheeky trackday early next year. The car is nowhere near finished but I am dying to feel how the car drives now! ASM Front Fenders, Harnesses, Snap Off Boss Kit and Side Mounts for the Seats followed by a wheel alignment and i should be good to go. A few pictures to moisten you up... https://c4.staticflickr.com/8/7667/3...67eb8cbb_o.jpg20160926_175050 by Jake Baker, on Flickr https://c1.staticflickr.com/9/8687/2...a9a5c2d1_o.jpg20160926_175348 by Jake Baker, on Flickr https://c7.staticflickr.com/6/5685/2...cd6bfef1_o.jpg20161014_102617 by Jake Baker, on Flickr https://c4.staticflickr.com/9/8550/2...97cc7ff8_o.jpg20160929_174552 by Jake Baker, on Flickr https://c2.staticflickr.com/9/8135/3...f9be9462_o.jpg20161014_104457 by Jake Baker, on Flickr https://c5.staticflickr.com/6/5730/3...33b80c99_o.jpg20161014_130934 by Jake Baker, on Flickr https://c8.staticflickr.com/6/5576/3...4c1e04d4_o.jpg20161014_130940 by Jake Baker, on Flickr |
The center console came out really good
|
So my Rollcage has gone to my mates to be welded in. I popped over too see him last night to get the driver seat position sorted as he is making some seat frames up to get the winged Sparco seat to clear the cage as best as possible.
This is it so far... He has had to cut, grind and re-notch pretty much every bar to get a nice fit. Still to fit are the harness bars, door bars and triangulation between the bulkhead and front strut towers (under the bonnet). All i can say is luckily i am only 5ft10" around 90kg because if i was any bigger i would not be able to get in this car  what a squeeze! definitely not elegant! I also had to get a snap off boss kit or i had no chance of getting in. So i went for the NRG short boss and the quick release which i believe is a copy of the Works Bell hubs? Anyway its very good, very smooth. I am impressed! :) https://c5.staticflickr.com/1/539/30...ce4e7d13_k.jpg IMG_20161214_211439 by Jake Baker, on Flickr https://c2.staticflickr.com/1/491/31...35cb5c31_b.jpg IMG_20161214_211247 by Jake Baker, on Flickr https://www.flickr.com/photos/143525.../shares/X1213e |
So the Custom Cages Roll Cage is all in and ive started to Primer it up ready for paint. Ive also removed the rear boot well to save some more weight!
Took a 4 hour trip to Wales pick up a cheap hardtop, fitting kit (fixed brackets) and managed to get some Polycarb windows for cheap whilst i was there also :) |
Removed the bonnet latch and cable as space is tight enough inside the cockpit now. Got myself some Aerocatches for the bonnet.
|
So over in the UK its hard to get any decent aftermarket panels, bumpers etc. I was looking at £1000 to import some replica ASM front fenders after shipping, tax and fee's!! After searching and searching i managed to find some EPR RACING ASM replica fenders for £400 delivered. Great!! So i thought....
Yeah, so basically they are absolute sh!t. I got all my money back apart from the shipping. They are damaged. Most of the bolt hole brackets dont even line up - the passenger wing is held on by 2 bolts as the rest were so far out. Their is nowhere for the top corners of the headlights to bolt too. The edges around the headlights are rough. Its nowhere near close to the front bumper aligning up. I have been quoted £450 to correct them as they are that bad and it will involve so much labour. Ive never fibreglassed before and ive heard its a right pain so i dont know whether to just bin them or give it ago myself. Seibon do a Carbon set for £700 but they are only 10+ mm not 20+ mm. DECISIONS!! |
More random pics of the crappy fenders!!
|
UPDATE.
So i got the inside all sprayed in White. Kind of regretting it as it gets dirty so easy! After using UPOL Etch Primer i wish i spent a bit more and went for some decent paint as i cheaped out and got some shyte from fleabay! Oh well, its no show car but looks good enough! Next job was to get the battery in and the car running. I went for an Odyssey PC925 with a fancy little cage. Then needed to sort all the loom out and get rid of everything im not going too need and tidy it all up. |
Dash cut to fit around the cage and installed - check.
Custom seat mounts and seats installed - check. Just little bits left to do inside now. Roll bar padding, some grip tape, rear view mirror that attatchs to the cage. |
Sold my Spoon ECU and got this for a steal
|
Swapped my clear indicator lenses for some ambers. Surprised how easy it was to split the headlights and swap them over, thought it was going to be a right pain.
|
Ive had some Spoon rep side skirts laying around at the top of my garage for over a year which i had forgotten about  so put the car all back together and got the rivet nut gun out and fit the side skirts. This is how the car stands at the moment, i currently have no more parts to fit which makes me sad! :(
I am off on holiday for 2 weeks to the US (NYC, Miami & Orlando) next week so that has eaten up all my funds! But when i return the plan is to get it into the bodyshop to sort a few little bits out and those front fenders ready for wrapping. As she stands... |
