I was watching this video and they mentioned the quick shifter a couple of times. Does this means that bikes are beginning to be clutch less now? I don't understand??

some OEMs are equipping bikes from the factory with quick shifters. BMW's S1000RR is one that comes to mind. its really meant for all out acceleration.

that being said, most sport bikes with cassette transmissions can be clutchless upshifted. just roll off throttle sharply, press the shifter to desired gear and roll back on. its typically not recommended for down shifting

Like deception says, bikes have always been able to upshift without the clutch (downshift too, without grinding, though the engine braking always makes that less-than-fun). Bikes use a constant mesh transmission.

Quickshifters are basically software to cut fuel even with the throttle rolled WOT to allow a shift to take place then allow the bike to be at WOT once the shift is completed. All it's basically doing is removing the need to manually roll off throttle to upshift.

Even if they can upshift without the clutch, do these bikes still have clutches?

Why would you need a clutch if you can upshift without problem and down shift?

i have a Triumph Street Triple R (kind of like a naked Daytona) w/ the quick shifter. It's really cool, you can upshift @ full throttle no clutch, no letting off the gas. If's more than SW, when you nudge the shifter if actuates the rest of the shift while slightly retarding the timing. Is it necessary for street riding? not at all Is it fun as shit? Hell yeah!

It def. shifts a lot faster than I can.
