Default Big-Time Retrofit On My RZ350

I thought some of you guys might be interested in my 2-stroke retrofit. This project is to upgrade my RZ350 with modern parts.

I bought (new) 2007 GSXR600 forks, lower fork clamp, steering damper, and front axle from ebay. I'll need to have some spacers made to mount the stem/lower clamp, and weld a bung onto the frame for the steering damper. I'll also need to make new steering stops and get a custom top clamp. I've got an Ohlins shock with remote resevoir and adjuster for the rear.

I looked at using the SUZ RG250 or Aprilia RS250 rear components - but for now, the '00-'01 YAM R1 is my choice because of the underslung rear brake with no torsion arm.

I'm planning on using a CF DUC Monster headlight cover/fairing and a CF headlight bucket, and wrapping the side panels and tail with real CF. I've seen a real CF fuel tank for a Monster, and I'm thinking about wrapping my OEM tank- but I'm not sure yet.

I still have to do more measurements before I can order the BST CF wheels and JMC custom swing arm with eccentric adjusters. Other stuff will include a Vapor electronic dash, Jim Lomas GP pipes with CF mufflers, Brembo brakes/rotors/mc, custom seat, rear sets, signals & mirrors. The frame is going to be stripped, gussetted and powdercoated.

The engine is already built, but I want to get better carbs before it goes back together. I also have new billet side covers and a custom oversize aluminum radiator. I'm excited - it's going to be a whole new 2-stroke bike!

Feel free to comment. I'll post up some pics when I make some progress.

The rear end conversion is a nightmare.

Looks like I can't get a carbon fiber wheel for the rear, unless I chop the frame (which I'm trying to avoid). The narrowest CF street wheel is 5.5 inches.

BST told me that they make a 5" rear wheel in CF, but I think that's their Supermotard wheel which looks like crap (IMO).

I'm trying to find out if Dymag can make me a custom rear 3-spoke magnesium wheel:

Thanks!

I haven't had a chance to reply to your PM, yet.

Your help is appreciated - I sent Maria an update last night.

I got a confirmation email from the Dymag technical department this morning, saying that it looks like they can make the custom magnesium wheels (with a surcharge to adjust the design for the CNC machine).

I'm going to double-check my measurements and place the orders for the swingarm and wheels ASAP.

Your company is already helping a lot with the project.

I didn't know that the R1 used a 15mm offset swingarm, until you guys let me know.

I think I can remove the offset by asking Dymag to make the wheel hub 15mm narrower on the sprocket side - then if you can make the swingarm 15mm narrower, the wheel should be centered.

If it works, then it's very good for the project. I need the swingarm to be as narrow as posssible to make room for the GP style expansion chambers.

JMC supplies a custom axle with the swingarm, correct?

I also asked Maria if the brake hanger could be made to accept a Brembo Rear Racing Caliper.

I hope I can get the details worked out ASAP - I'd like to get most of the parts ordered before the end of the year.

Well, I checked my calculations, and I messed up the offset correction.

I think I need to use the following figures:

OEM R1 Swingarm I.D. = 242mm SwingarmCenter = 121mm
Wheel Center (with 15mm offset Arm) = 136mm / 106mm to Swingarm
Reduce Wheel Hub/Spacer Width 22mm Sprocket Side (136-22=114mm)
Increase Wheel Hub / Spacer Width 8mm - Brake Side (106+8=114mm)
Decrease Swingarm I.D. 14mm from 242mm to 228mm

I hope this will center the wheel!
