thinking of buying a bike
well i got kind of a situation here. ive always wanted a bike and one of the reasons i want them is so i stop modding my car for speed cuse ill have the bike then trade the car for a jeep or something. read the noob section and learned alot of info. got a few questions
carb or fuel injection- is one better or is it preference.
bike size. i want to start on a 250 or 500 being ive never ridden a bike before dirt bikes nothing.
my friend who has been riding for obo 10 years said i should get a 600 and he would teach me and take it slow. idk how i feel about that it couls obviously work out good or bad.

you wont regret starting out on a 250. you'll learn a lot from it. but you will out grow it pretty quickly. some people do just fine starting out on a 600 supersport. you seem skeptical about starting on a 600 so i would start off with something smaller than that. take the msf course first before u decide on what bike to get. just dont rush yourself.

Only the most up-to-date FI (e.g. Honda's and Yamaha's very latest supersport) is as easy to ride as a decent carb'd setup. FI in bikes tends to be abrupt at low throttle or when closing, especially in larger engines, but it is true that you never have to fiddle with a choke.

Carbs are, for the most part, just fine, and in many instances *less* troublesome than fuel injection in bikes (ditto what Penforhire sez).
FWIW, I *did* have to fiddle with a choke lever on my FI'd Aprilia Tuono, same as I do with my '00 carbed SV! And if anything, the SV had better "carburetion"!
Also, mixture changes with carbs cost a few bucks (literally $6 for me rejetting the SV for airbox/exhaust mods). MIxture changes with F.I. are gonna cost you a chip or power commander (or BOTH) for hundreds of $$$.

You are making the right choice going with a slower bike.
Though don't get hung up on the cc's too much. I started out on a '00 SV650, which was a great starter bike. It's engine may be larger then a 600cc, but it makes only just over half the power and is much more tame.
The new Ninja 250 is an excellent bike and looks great (no matter what anyone says, looks do matter as it can inspire you to ride more) and can be found more affordable now. That was my intended starting bike, but at the time they just made it to the show room and were costing a premium.

I would also recommend an SV650. I still enjoy mine and don't want to get rid of it, even after stepping up to a larger bike. It is a blast to ride.

you will likely be riding 250s in that class so you can actually test drive one to see if its gonna work for your first bike.
you would likely outgrow a 250 pretty quickly (6 mos to a year), but they are a conservative way to start out... they also maintain value pretty welll so you shouldnt lose much money with one-
also, pretty sure that most 250s are carb bikes. my personal preference is injected bikes. i dont like playing with the choke (my wifes bike has one)- on an injected bike i can just get on and ride. dont have to worry about whether i can hit it yet or not-
i also like to adjust my fuel mixture to my ride style. yes, i can do that on a carb bike, but it seems easier to me on the injected bikes (with controllers- instead of just changng the chip).
