Default Anyone failed smog test due to gas cap?

My MY2000 S2000 just failed its smog test. In all the years that I've owned cars in CA, none of my cars have ever failed a smog test. Because I wanted to get the test done today, I took the car to a gas station that I have not used before. The tests were doing fine until it got to the gas cap test. It failed the test, and the tester was just too eager to sell me a new cap for $10 to have it pass the test. I declined his offer, and he kept redminding me that there is no free retest after it failed.

I've never had the gas cap fail a smog test before, and I wonder how many of you experienced a smog test failure due to the gas cap.

Actually it happened to my 2000 S2000 just last year. It passed everything except for the gas cap. The smog check center sold me one for $10. It was either that or drive down to Honda (which was closed on Sunday) and get a replacement.

Why didn't you just buy the gas cap?

Yes, it has to do with the pressure. Actually the smog check technician said it's pretty common among Honda's. Dunno if that's true, but I've owned over 4 Honda's and never had this gas cap problem before.
