Default Highway 36 - 140 Miles of FUN

Someday we need to take a drive on Hwy 36 in the "S" been on it many times on bikes and other cars.
It is one of the best roads in CA at 140 miles one way from Red Bluff to the coast with some very good side roads to play on for a very fun weekend.

For one of my roadfordays.com trips, I have been planning to drive up Highway 1/101, stay the night in Fortuna, then storm 36 to Lassen Volcanic National Park and spend a few days there. Lassen is supposed to be awesome. Lassen is only open for a few months in the summer, though. The rest of the time it is closed for snow. I might drive home down 395 and 4. That means I'm sleeping on your futon, Rob.

I've taken 36 from 101 to 3 and 3 to 299 towards Redding. Awesome roads but 299 was super fun because I was able to hook up with some riders one of which left his group to play. They ended up showing us the nightlife in Redding, fun times for sure. I'd love to get on 299 again sometime, it's easily twice as good as skaggs from what I remember.

For a slower pace(you don't want to run anyone over) you can take this from 36 to 299, its 54 miles and very narrow but has some amazing views. Most don't even know it goes through

Here are my pic's of one of our day drives up to 36, NF Rd. 1/Titlow Hill Rd. up to 299 and back down through The Ave. of the Giants.

All of the pic's after the Sun rise up to the lunch in Ferndale pic are from NF Rd. 1 and Titlow Hill Rd.

This would be a very fun one day drive with time to wash the car after or find some other roads to explore. At 375+ miles most of it can be driven hard(except NF Rd. 1).

Or if you want to make it a longer day drive you can take this loop out of Ferndale, it will add about 100 miles to your drive.

This is in my back yard. I live in Fortuna. 36 is possibly one of the nicest roads in Cali, no bullsh!t.
Get at me if you come this way. I'd be willing roll around for a bit. Winter weather on 36 is bad though. It will be snowing soon and they don't plow the roads past Dinsmore store, or Mad River Burger Bar.
On another note. I've lost many a friend on 36 while on my bike. It is not to be taken lightly.
Other roads up here Include 299 to Redding, not a favorite of mine due to CHP. But highway 96, and highway 3 are a blast.
101 to Crescent City over 199 into Oregon is good also.
