rotor's life

I measured my front rotors last night, my front rotors are about 24mm thick.

At what thickness do they need to be replaced?

Voodoo_S2K 01-06-2010 03:31 PM

I don't recall the exact number but it says it on the inside edge of the rotor.

Service manual says rotor service limit min 23mm F, 10mm R.

So far my front stock one has been turned twice already, it's pretty close to the min limit...

rob-2 01-06-2010 04:35 PM

Interesting. So the min limit is 23 after turning? As in you can wear it below 23mm or that 23mm is the limit to remove them?

Any idea how many mm's it takes to wear a set of pads down?

I got the car with almost new pads, but clearly not new rotors.

macr88 01-06-2010 07:50 PM

It means at 23mm it should be taken out of service. Service Limit.

It depends on the pads and driving style. My guess would be three sets of pads per rotor. Just guess :)

Looks like its time to replace them.

Think I can just slap on new rotors? I've got only 10K on the new pads.

macr88 01-06-2010 08:08 PM

If they're badly grooved then just sand them down a bit. If not then yea not a problem.

rob-2 01-06-2010 08:19 PM

Great. Off to get new rotors.

rob-2 01-09-2010 10:06 PM

Well I replaced the front rotors. After pulling the old ones off the 24mm I measured was way off. I was well below that. There was a 2-3mm lip on the leading edge.

Ended up with new rotors and pads. Just couldn't bring myself to put used pads on new rotors.

Have to say the honda oem pads are pretty nice, I hope I do not regret the Hawk HPS pads. They just don't 'bite' as hard, or maybe the require breaking in.

macr88 01-09-2010 10:10 PM

Not sure what HPS are or where they rank as far as HP+ but I have HP+ and they have more initial bite than stock but fade much earlier than stock.

lewiS2K 01-10-2010 12:01 PM

heard HPS was whack... hope u didn't pay more than 100 for the full set...

 how bad are the rotors? any good as a track set?

XenonKiller99 01-10-2010 12:06 PM

I've got some used front and rear OEM rotors. They look like they're in excellent condition. Not sure how much u want the full set for...? it's just sitting the attic. Anyone interested can come and take a look/measure the rotors. lol

lewiS2K 01-10-2010 01:51 PM

how much you want for the fronts?

The HPS seem to feel similar to OEM. OEM had more 'bite' but I cannot say for sure as these new pads are barely broken in.

The fronts I replaced were shot. I wouldn't track them for fear of failure.

I paid 110 for the set of HPS pads. OEM pads are $180.

I don't race the car. If I track it, it'll be different pad/rotors.

well you paid a fair price... I don't think i would mind running HPS as a daily... and like u said, when and if you go track, it'll be a good idea to upgrade :D

It seemed reasonable for a daily.

I'd like to start tracking soon but I have to buy my wife a car first.

180 for oem pads? They're about $100 online for front and rear. H&A Honda or Hardtopguy

Key words "front and rear"
fronts are like 54 bucks or something like that.

Your good set should be your track set.

did you bed them in yet?

if not i'd suggest it, just a couple of hard full-force stops and it'll make the brake pad + rotor mate better. In an open controlled environment of course.

Help me with this... is hardtopguy selling per wheel or per axle?

It seemed questionable to me:

Front pads
Rear Pads

If per axle than yeah, pads would be $100/car but if per axle I'm right on the $180.

Followed the Hawk instructions to bedding.

marksae 01-11-2010 08:52 AM

Pads are always sold per axle.

I was unaware of that. Knowing that I would have stuck with OEM; which I like. I guess I'll just have to wear them out.

marksae 01-11-2010 09:01 AM

I guess you just need to buy pads a few times to find out.. hehe..

Yeah, the last 2 times I've bought and installed them myself the online description was very clear on the number of pads included.

Live and learn I guess. My mind cannot remember anything else
