Trimmed Front License Plate

Is it legal to trim down the front plate to just show the plate number?
I saw a Lexus with that and it complimented the front fascia surprisingly well.

I know the front plate breaks up the perfect design on our beautiful mugs...so what's the deal?

I've also seen Euro-style plates COVERED with just the CA number...what about that?

Thanks for the info!

i think the answer to your second question is they do it so when they go to a car meet they just take off the CA plate and have the euro plate for show.

I think any modification would be suspect. If not, at least its a reason to pull you over. Anything that doesnt look oem will catch their eye. It comes with the car. I dont drive with a front plate...Its a matter of time. No matter how well Im driving while he/she is watching.

Its calling attention!

:p

I think its a good idea, I run to plate but I mean the front plate at least showing numbers solves the issue for the police. The tabs are on the back anyway. All they need is front identification which that does. I'd be interested to see what cops say off the record.

I just called the Burbank PD to ask for the 'official' word.
The Sergeant told me that it is illegal to deface the plate in any way.
He said we (the drivers) don't own the plate, the state does.

"We write tickets for that stuff all the time," he said.

So that's the answer. Oh well.

there used to be a civic at my old apartment who trimmed off the top and bottom of the front plate. i think it looks retarded. at least on that car.

nope, it's not legal. like the sgt said, the state owns the plate.

Just like the state owns those who made the plate.
