Default Truck Buying Decision

I am looking for a truck. This is not your yuppie SUV or "can't decide if I am a truck or ?" - I am looking for a truck with an open bed.

Here are the things that I want and some trucks I looked at.

Purpose:

- Towing 16' tandem race trailer (up to about 5500 lbs)
- go-kart transport in back of bed (one only)
- transporting two kids and wife on trip to mountains
- daily driver
- hauling boxes of computer networking gear in back
- transporting stuff for friends

Features needed:

- crew cab (4 doors)
- short bed
- 4x4
- nice inside
- DVD player in back (can get this installed aftermarket that is better and maybe cheaper)

I looked at Ford, Toyota, and Chevy. Here is what I liked/disliked about those:

- Ford: awesome power from 6.0 diesel, lots of room, great ride, nice interior, expensive
- Chevy: great instrumentation, bouncy ride, good power
- Toyota: nice interior, great ride, nice features, a little weak on power

What advice can you guys give me. To keep this on the board, I may want to transport an S2000 with the truck also....

regards

Rick

I'm not a real truck person, but some people that I know told me that the Dodge trucks have a LOT of pulling power. Have you looked into any of those??

Dodges do have a lot of pulling power, but from what i see, that power is somewhat short lived. I have heard that Dodge has improved this recenetly though. With that said, I must say as far as trucks go, I am a chevy guy. I have an S-10 and love it. I might suggest that instead of looking at Chevy, look at GM. I know same company, but GM is a truck company, and their trucks have a few features that the chevys don't. As for price, I think the Ford's will be cheaper, but I think the difference is well paid for in a Chevy/GM. Also, as for Toyota, stay clear of the Tundra. It may look good outside and on paper, but I've had to many friends with them that hate them completely. I hope this helps.

Have you investigated the upcoming Nissan Titan? They're the new kid on the block - so will be trying very hard; but an unproven V8 (AFAIK) could be a negative.
I, on the other hand, have a Tundra - and love it - but do no towing (need to get a race car first).

Ford all the way I come from a "ford family" and I can say they take seriously obscene punishement. Ford builds very solid trucks. Remember it isn't just about power, the entire chassis and drivetrain need to be able to withstand all that power. There are a lot of really nice trucks out there, but my money would be on the ford. Good luck.

Well, after getting the Ford F-250 diesel and having it for 10 months, the fuel pump died doing 65 mph on the freeway. Needless to say, it was scarey without any brakes and little assist on the heavy-ass steering.

I got rid of the "tool" that I could not rely on anymore. Also, Ford was terrible on their service and standing behind the truck.

I then went out and bought the Titan. It is awesome with one reservation, the brakes. I just got the new brakes with the large front rotors - wow! Seems to be much better. Now the truck is ideal. The truck easily pulls the trailer full of karts.

Are the karters on the board attending the Moran race on September 11th. Should be an awesome race. I know Mike is attending - I will be there.

See ya and hope to be on here more.

regards

Rick
